Questions Regarding A Transfer

Hi all,

I am a noob to this forum, but had a question regarding me wanting to transfer to UCSD. I want to transfer in hopes of getting in to a Biological Science Major, but the only thing is it is impacted. I don't have the best GPA, and two of the classes, for the IGETC, I got C's in. Also when I initially started CC I had a major in Criminal Justice, so I have some of those classes on my transcript.

My question is: Will those classes for the Criminal Justice major be used to determine if I get in? (I'd rather that they didn't) Also, can I retake other classes in the same category as those 2 classes I got C's in so that they don't get counted against me?

Not sure if this makes sense, but I'd be glad to clarify anything. I just really want some type feedback on this situation.

First, transfer to UCSD is guaranteed if you TAG in (get IGETC done, math the fall before, english the spring before). You won’t get into your major, especially if it’s biology, when it’s impacted. You will still get accepted, but you’ll have to pick a different major. In all honesty, you’ll probably still get into Biological Sciences, but in case you don’t, be prepared.

Second, which biology major is it? Are you going pre-med? Consider a major related to your major and take the biology classes anyway. Explain to your counselor that you want to major in biological sciences but it’s impacted so you’re hoping to get in after taking the lower division preparation.

Lastly, as long as you’re above a 3.0, don’t worry about the criminal justice classes. Check assist.org and see if they even transfer. If they don’t transfer, UCSD won’t really care about them, because they don’t affect your transfer GPA, which affects your overall application.

Good luck and hope you get in!

I am going for pre-med, and the thing is I have completed all of my IGETC courses because I wasn’t quite sure of what I wanted to do, but I did know that I wanted to transfer to a UC. So now I’m working on all of my major classes (i.e. ochem, physics, calc, bio). I just have to really work on bringing up my GPA because it is a 2.86 right now =/

Get a 3.0 and if you’re doing pre-med, it doesn’t matter what your major is. Pre-med is a track, not a major.

If anything, you better major in something you love in case you don’t make it into medicine school. And I hate to be a dream crusher, but with a 2.86, that should be what you’re thinking primarily of right now. A 2.86 is just not “medicine school” material. People with 3.8’s get shut down. Unless you’re the golden child of the MCAT exam and pull a 40+, I wouldn’t count on medicine school unless you turn a really impressive cumulative GPA.

Pick a major that you can inflate your GPA with if med school is the #1 and only goal for you. But do it in something you enjoy so you can do better at it.
