As the title suggests, I have three queries I was hoping some of you here could help me with:
- I got admitted to the Engineering Management major at Miami. How good is the program? I wanted to take engineering but at the same time wanted a Business education too. Will I be at a severe disadvantage when compared to students at Farmers for jobs?
- I haven't committed yet to Miami, but when I do, how do I choose my housing preference? Any advice from current Miami students?
- I wasn't placed into any Honors program when admitted. Will this put me at a major disadvantage while choosing housing/dorms? Also, can I apply to get into Honors after I start college?
We just got home from Make it Miami day. I will post more comprehensive MIM info in another thread, but wanted to answer your questions the best I could. My son is a future engineer too, and has an interest in business.
- Miami is growing their engineering program. The reputation of Miami is solid, and will grow in the ranking for certain. Just based on sheer numbers, you can't compare to a Georgia Tech, for example. But that's by design. There are real opportunities to implement what they are learning in real life. For example, while eating at a bagel store, we learned of a mechanical engineering student who is currently in the U.K. engineering devices to help children with muscle weekness. That's just one example of the hands on approach afforded Miami students. Miami has a nice list of accredited engineering majors. All classes are tought by faculty.
To address your business question, there are opportunities to minor in buisiness. There is a MIM session which specifically addresses “business options for the non Farmers business major”. You could even double major in business, but would have to have a 3.5 gpa and other requirements including a mimimum number of credit hours at Miami.
Re jobs for graduating engineers, those stats are crazy awesome. Something like 95% had jobs or were in grad school by fall. And if I remember right, it was like 88% had jobs, so it wasn’t like the grad school kids were skewing the numbers. They also listed salaries for engineers. That was like $50-75k starting. The paper engineers did even better.
- You asked about housing and choosing a dorm. There was a session on housing at MIM. The second you commit to Miami, you can get on housing and complete the questionnaire. Many students use the tool on Facebook to meet prospective roommmates And those students have to list each other on the forms and also list same LLCs in preference order. All of this is on the website under housing.
- I have no info on honors.
You don’t have to be accepted into Honors to live in the honors dorms, and you can apply again to honors once you are enrolled.
