Questions regarding GPA requirements for music therapy at Berklee

I was reading through the music therapy entry requirements at the Berklee College of Music website. It says that I need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7. From what I understand, every freshman in Berklee takes the same music courses during their first semester. Does this 2.7 GPA refer to the GPA I will obtain from the first semester courses or the GPA I had obtained from my high school grades? I’m confused.

At Berklee you do not pick a major until the end of your second semester. Some majors require an application and admittance into the program and I believe Music Therapy is one of those Majors. I believe that the GPA they speak of is at Berklee. Berklee does like to see a good academic record but there are no specific guidelines to be accepted. Your audition and interview will be the largest determining factor of your admittance into Berklee. The Class of 2019 statistics were discussed at the opening convocation. This was the most competitive year in its history with about 20% acceptance rate. Good luck.

@rockinmomab - about 20% of applicants enroll. Closer to 40% are admitted, and and of those accepted around 40% attend. There is about 1,000 in each class and 6,000 applicants (2400 or so admitted)…

@ClarinetDad16 Not the case this year. There were over 9,000 applicants this year. Roger Brown told us this in the opening convocation. Lowest percentage of acceptance in the history of the school.

Where do you get your info? Also, if you are looking at Berklee website that info is over 3 years old. Does your child attend Berklee,

Not sure where your statistics are from. There is not 40% acceptance rate listed anywhere and you say 20% enroll and 40% attend. What does that mean??? Is it 20 or is it 40? I don’t understand where you are getting your information.

You don’t declare a major at Berklee until a semester or two in, depending on how many credits you have, they are looking at is your Berklee GPA at that point. All first semester students have a week of orientation during which they take an array of placement assessments and then are placed in appropriate level classes, so not all first semester students are in the same classes, the only class they will all have is a one credit seminar with their peer advisory group, Artistry, Creativity, and Inquiry. They will generally have similar schedules, for instance, one liberal arts course, one ensemble, private lessons, one music tech courses, and a variety of theory (basic theory or a combination of various separate ear training, arranging and harmony), but the specific courses will vary based on placements.

I seriously doubt their applications went up 50% from the year prior.

No I don’t have any kids at the school…

@ClarinetDad16 …I was just at Berklee again last week and attended a luncheon where Roger Brown (President) once again said that applications for the 2015-2016 year was around 9,000! Only thing I misquoted was acceptance rate for this year’s incoming class. I had stated it was 20%…it was actually 29%. So you don’t need to seriously doubt anything!
