How do I ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation? What I've gathered from various dicussions on here is that it goes something like:
-Approach teacher
-Say that you are applying for college and need a letter of recommendation
-Request recommendation
-Present resume/academic achievements if necessary
-Assign them as recommneders online if they accept
-Send thank you note after they've completed the recommendation
Is this the right way of doing this?

Can I assign one recommender to all of the colleges I am applying to? If so, is there anything special I should do to make it as easy as possible for my teacher get the recommendation in to all colleges?

If I request a letter of recommendation online, will my teacher see which colleges I am applying to?

If a teacher finishes their letter early, and I decide I want to apply to another college, can I use the same letter for the new college, and if so what is the process for that?

Even if you can't/don't have time to answer all of these questions, I would appreciate help with any of the questions you can answer, and thank you in advance

First off, most colleges require two letters of recommendation.

Yes, that’s the right way.

Yes, you can. Make sure that you recommender knows the required format of the LOR. That’s very important.

No, I think. Define online. If you mean email, then no, but you should talk to your teachers about the colleges that you are applying to.

Yes, you can and there’s no process. Just tell your counselor.

Just completing what Hawkace said: About 3, they definitely don’t know which colleges you’re applying through Common App, unless you tell them, of course…
And about 4, you can assign them to any college before or after they’ve submitted their letter (just select the teacher on Recommendations and FERPA, for the selected college, and click Assign). For example, you’d assigned a teacher to Harvard and Yale before he submitted it. After submitting, if you want to assign them to UCLA, let’s say, you can, and UCLA will get the same letter as Harvard and Yale (assuming you assigned the teacher to UCLA before the application deadline), and he won’t even know about this swift orderly addition. And I don’t even think you would NEED to tell your counselor about that addition, since that’s just you and your teacher’s business, but you can tell him/her if you want to, of course.

Thank you very much!

Just clarify that there is an invitation step on CA before assigning them to your college application. Also, you should track your application on CA to make sure they have submitted the LOR timely. If not, you may need to follow up with them.
