Questions regarding UC San Diego.

So I am a first generation college student. I was born here in the U.S., while my older brother and mother are both undocumented. With SD being so close to the border, do they risk getting detained by visiting? I went to Triton Day this past Saturday with my brother’s girlfriend because my mom was working and my brother did not want to risk it (neither did my mom). I loved the campus, I like Muir, and I just enjoyed it.

But I don’t want to risk them. They’re too precious to me and I don’t want them to get deported. They want to go help me set up my dorm but… What if I.C.E. gets them? I know it may sound like a silly concern to you all, but it’s 2 AM and I can’t stop worrying about it. On my way back home, I saw two ICE cars. Agh.

I emailed UCSD concerning my issues today. Hopefully they get back to me.

I basically said that I might withdrawal my SIR. As much as I loved the school, I love my family even more.

Another question is if UCSD is hard? I got into Muir College, and it has the easiest GEs out of all 6. How hard is it? How safe? How supportive of its students? Campus life? Activities to do around there?

Last question: Since I used a fee waiver, my SIR was deferred for UCSD. Can I still use it for a second deposit (say for UCI or UCSB) just in case I do end up withdrawing?

Thanks ahead of time to any of you who address any of my concerns. You have no idea how much it means to me.

UCSD is a sanctuary campus. There are many, many undocumented students on campus and a very active undocumented student resource center. If they visit you on campus, they will not be required to produce papers for any immigration authorities nor will they have to cooperate with ICE for the duration of their visit. Unfortunately, there is some risk associated with being in San Diego off-campus (ICE occasionally sets up “random” checkpoints on I-5 near Carlsbad) but I don’t believe this is a stronger risk than that which exists in the Irvine or Goleta areas. Most importantly, don’t trip about it until you hear back from campus. They’re very keen to make sure students without documentation and their relatives without documentation feel welcomed on campus and can seek the education and opportunities they deserve.

Thank you so much! You eased most of my worry.

And again, thank you so so sososososoosoooo much for the checkpoint. I will memorize it!
