Questions you wish you had asked?

I'm a junior in high school, and I plan to begin my college search within the next few months. I'm curious...

Are there any particular questions that you think are important to ask admissions officers? Questions you wish you had asked? Questions that may not have been answered in the various college guidebooks?

Thanks!

What percent of freshmen who start in my major, graduate from the same major? example: start in engineering, graduate from engineering

If other factors remain constant, will the grant money increase as tuition increases? (for the financial aid office)

What services are provided for finding internships and summer jobs?

What services are provided for applying for graduate school, professional school, job? (after graduation)

How good is the faculty advising system? (for selecting courses, deciding where to apply for graduate school or job)

How many undergrads are involved in research projects or academic scholarship?

What are the SATs for students who enroll in my major?

What departments do you consider the strongest at your school, and why?

What is your after graduate placement program? You want to know if they can connect you with a job you desire to have after you graduate!

Also, do the dorms have air conditioning!?!

Another question.

If I were to trasfer schools, what colleges/universities will my credits transfer to? Maybe not a question you would directly ask, but found that out.

This is more Financial Aid related, but if you are a candidate for Financial Aid, you should look to see if the school provides an FA calculator.

Also, in addition to the above suggestion (re aid over time), you may want to ask:

How do you treat outside scholarships?
Is there a standard loan portion of the aid package, and how much in each year?
What college scholarships are available and are there separate applications?
Do you meet full need / are you need blind?

Also, many schools have restrictions on aid as it relates to study abroad. This can be complicated, but if you're interested in such an option, it's worthwhile to do your research.

Collegehelp nailed it. What do you do for you students before and after graduation to help them get a professional career? What kind of research/internship programs are offered? What kind of advising is offered? How much is tuition expected to rise over the next four years?

Be sure and check campus crime statistics. I believe schools are required to post them on their web site. I should have checked crime statistics for the surrounding town/city. My son seems to living in a war zone.

If you're an athlete, especially at the Div. 3 level where there are no scholarships so it can be hard to tell if coaches are really serious when they court you, tread carefully. If continuing your sport in college is important to you, meet with prospective coaches and ask questions like:

-Roughly how many new players show up each fall?

-Are there try-outs? If yes, about how many new players make the team?

-How many current players play my position (or are in my event, etc.)? Of these, how many will return next year?

-What is the practice schedule and does the team train together in the off season? What if I have a lab or other school-related requirement during one or more practice sessions?

What's the weather like Dec-Feb?
What's the farthest I might have to walk to a class?
How many classes is it typical to take per semester?
How is the off-campus housing?
How many years can I expect to live on-campus?

My major will likely be (fill in the blank)

How commonly are sophomores unable to take required classes for their major because the class is full? How about juniors? Are additional sections added based upon demand?

ooo. This should be bookmarked.

this is a good thread esp since im in the middle of the college process

Haha, I did bookmark this before even reading your post :)

How difficult is it to get into popular classes as a freshman or sophomore?

What happens if you get sick?

what is the area surrounding the college like? Are they friendly toward the college? What types of services and retail establishments are within walking distance?

How many of the freshmen on campus in fall 2008 were living in converted study lounges? How many of the freshmen were living tripled up in a double room?

How do you possibly justify charging so much money for tuition and room and board at your college when your endowment is growing?

What is the average class size? (overall and in major)

How late are computer labs open? library?

What is the off-campus housing like?

Can I register for classes online?

Are healthy food alternatives available in dining halls?

How flexible are the meal plans?

What is my estimated "expected family contribution"?

How difficult is it to change majors from [mymajor] to [othermajor]?

What are the main reasons students drop out?

What is the best way to succeed?

In what ways is this school changing?

What are the general compositions of the classes in my major (i.e. how many fresh,soph,...)?
