questions

has anyone here actually toured the school? i was in boston this past weekend and wanted to tour but because the school was on spring break they weren't giving tours.

it seemed like the school was all over the place! haha. i was just wondering what everyone thought about the looks of the buildings on the insides. are they nice? comfortable? state-of-the-art? how would you describe them?

also, what is your take on emersons academic classes?

I'm going the first week of April. I'll try and take pics and post my impressions.

My biggest worry is the size of Emerson's school; it's so tiny. All the other schools I applied to all have around 6000+ undergraduates (except one or two, but those are still big)

Magster definitely post a report after thr trip. I don't think the size of the school is a problem because it is a creative kind of school and that way you get more chance to actually be exposed to what you want to do. I have all the same questions as krae, buildings, dorms, classes etc and add on the kinds of students and access to profs. Someone told me dorms at Emerson can be a real problem based on availaibility and pretty ratty so there is another one.

magster: that would be awesome to see your pics. im glad you get to visit! i'm the same as you, the size worries me too.

emerson seems like it would be a great school, i just hope it really is as great as they make it seem haha.

what majors did you guys apply for? and where else did you apply?

You guys can ask me some questions if you like. I visited back in the fall, but my tour guide was really great and the tour went on for about three hours! We saw just about everything.

I was most impressed by the state-of-the-art equipment and rooms that were available. Most of the rooms were very creative looking and seemed to be relatively new, as were the computers and technology (much newer than the ones I saw at BU...). One of the coolest rooms I saw was this sound room where there were tons of tiles on the floor that had materials such as leaves or sand or gravel underneath so those sounds could be added into the movies you produce or whatever.

I liked the area because it was very urban. I mean, you walk out of the buildings and you are in the city. Emerson was easily my most memorable tour out of all the colleges I visited.

I applied to major in Screenwriting or Film. My other colleges were NYU, Syracuse U, American U, BU, BC, Ithaca, Smith, and UCONN.

Tell me about what the dorms are like? Students seemed friendly? Gotta have a car? Class size?

I visited the school last spring and I fell in love with it. It was the only school that I loved every part of it. All the classrooms and other facilaties looked very new and state of the art. Their main theater is absolutely gorgeous (It was an old opera house that they bought and restored). The dorms were a nice size (nothing too big or too small-pretty much like all the other dorms I've seen). It is a small school, but I like that. There really are only a few buildings and most of them are connected to each other which would be good in the cold weather. There really isnt much of a traditional campus, but it is literally across the street from Boston Commons which could serve the same purpose as a traditional quad. It's in the middle of Boston which has a good public transportation system, so unless you need to travel outside of the city, I wouldn't see a need to have a car (My brother goes to Northeastern University in Boston and doesn't need a car)

So Scottie and mnemosyne. I asked thsi at another place at Emerson here but I'll ask it here too. I read this article in the Berkely Beacon (Emerson newspaper) that the students are complaining about being prayed on with crime. Did the tour person or anyone else say anything about security? What about housing/ apartment prices and availability when dorms or full or you want to get out of them? Do they have enough dorms if you want to stay in them?

Umm I don't know much about the crime. My mom works with someone who's brother goes to Emerson and he said that the apartment prices around there are out of control because it is right on the Commons. So if you decide to move off campus you would have to pay an arm and a leg or you would have to live somewhere a little out of the way

HMMM wonder how long you can stay in the dorms........

Um I dont know. I'm sure there is somewhere you can find out how long you are guarenteed housing for

I visited emerson twice this fall, the first time was a fall visit day where i got a tour of everything and went to meetings about different aspects of the school and programs and then the second visit was a portfolio review and i got to sit in on a class and talk to a bunch of kids. i don't get on CC much, so if you wana know anything i'd be happy to help.
