From what I've seen online (havent visited yet), I like the school. But according to princetonreview, it has an unsightly campus. It didn't look "unsightly" in pictures. What do you/ur son/husband think about the campus? Is it a safe campus? What does ur son do for fun in raleigh?

I would like to know what people think about this school. And no one wants to post new threads except me. :(

Hi nvra2ndchance, Yes you will hear many say that NCSU is not a beautiful campus. The main reason for this is that there is not a huge quad surrounded by dorms/classrooms like many colleges have. By this I mean, there are less huge green grassy areas. Instead, State has a large area called the Brickyard that is the center of the university. It has a long history at NCSU and is the hub of the campus. There are trees but lots of red brick. Both H and S think it's great (of course). The good part about not having huge grassy expanses is that it makes a large school much more compact and easy to get around. My S has visited friends at UNC and says it takes them way longer to get everywhere than at State. This means you can sleep later and still make it to class on time!
There is a railroad track that runs thru campus so there are short tunnels for students to take to get back and forth to class. The biggest one is called the "Free Expression Tunnel". It's pretty cool because students are allowed to paint anything they want inside it. It's always changing and interesting.
I believe the campus is as safe as any city campus would be. I know last year, there were a couple of robberies but it was in the middle of the night and the people were out on campus alone. You have to be smart wherever you go. My S never felt afraid to be out.

S and friends had a great time in Raleigh. Of course there are all the Wolfpack ballgames to attend. Football season is very exciting. They also went to professional hockey games (go Hurricanes), movies, concerts. There is a local restaurant (The Cookout) that caters to NCSU students. It stays open half the night and has cheap prices. They went there a LOT. The on-campus intra-mural sports activities are big. There are sports of every kind. S and friends from his dorm formed a dodgeball team and competed. The NC State Fair comes to Raleigh for 2 weeks every year which is always fun. Also Raleigh's location makes it a short drive to the beach (about 2 hours). S took a few roadtrips to Wilmington (home of UNC-Wilmington) on weekends when the weather was nice. There is plenty to do if you get out of your dorm and go find it.

State is most well known for engineering and agriculture but they have just about any major you can think of (and some you've never heard of).
If you are interested in State, don't be discouraged by it's lack of discussion on cc. Try to go to Raleigh and see for yourself.
