I'm going to keep this short : I'm a Canadian student (going into senior year) wanting to apply to schools like UCLA, USC and NYU. I have around a 89% average, SAT around 2010 and good ECs. I am president of a club, and a member of several clubs, do sports, and volunteer a lot. HOWEVER, I have never done any APs. What do you think are my chances and how many APs should I take senior year? Thank you so much!!

2010 and 89 is good enough for NYU prob not UCLA or USC. I wouldnt jump right into it because APs are very difficult. It depends on you.

@APsooof thanks for the reply! so you don’t think I should take any APs? Wouldn’t that decrease my chances? I was thinking of taking AP Stats and AP Human Geo or just AP Human Geo for senior year

Colleges will evaluate you against the courses offered at your school. If your school offers few or no AP’s, it will not hurt you in the application process. More important for you is to boost your SAT scores for a chance at colleges like UCLA or USC.

Yes. Take as many APs as you think you can get A’s and if you are prepared to work. They’ll be more important in your 1st semester as that semester may have admissions impact.

Also, as an international, you are not very likely to gain admissions to any of those schools, but try your hardest with strong essays and recommendations. Look at a couple safeties and a couple schools just below the tier you named. Also run the Net Price Calculator for each school.

@wayneandgarth thanks so much for answering!! just wondering, do you think my chances will decrease if I only take 1 AP vs 2 AP?

The more the better rigor you show. But, you need to be confident you can handle the load you choose. Again, better to get an A in a “regular” course than a B in AP. A key consideration is how many APs your school makes available.
