How crucial is Senior year first semester?

Though people tell me to try to completely ace first semester Senior year, I find that incredibly difficult to do when I have 5 AP's and a varsity sport eating away all my time. In addition, most of my teachers are somewhat difficult. I am afriad I will not consistently get A's like I have in the past. What is the best course of action? Should I apply to only the UC's and EA/ED schools that don't require senior grades? Or do I drop out of AP English/etc. to lessen my workload? I want to try to optimalize my chances of getting into a top school.

Colleges realize that a full AP program with a sport is hard. You should try to your utmost but you don’t need to keep straight As.

5 APs may be too much. I would think taking 3 APs is about right. Did you take any AP in 11th or 10th grade?

Yes, I have taken 5 APs for Junior/Sophomore Years and did good on the AP tests for them. I have only gotten a B once in Sophomore Honors English, so if I don’t do so hot, it’ll be enough to cause a noticeable downward trend. Assuming I get something maybe just a little bit above or equal to a 3.0 UW, how badly would this hurt me if I mostly apply to publics/EA/ED schools that will not look at the midyear/first-quarter reports?

EA and ED schools won’t have those grades to consider. That being said, they will look at them when they come out (after a preliminary admission decision is given).

You should apply to NYU. They don’t look at midyear report. Not sure which other schools.
