So I read that Cal Poly has some specific History/Poly Sci requirement when transferring. Can anyone explain this to me of what I need to do? Do I just take one history class or something?

I plan on applying to Cal Poly from a CCC (De Anza) as a Business Admin major this year for Fall 2013

I think I should add that I’m doing the IGETC route. I know all the requirements and working on completing them for IGETC and my major. But this history thing still has me confused a bit

I’m unclear about what you are specifically talking about so I’ll try to answer your question in a different way. I have never heard about something special needed for cal poly slo.

To be a transfer student you have to complete your 60 units of lower division before transfer. You also must complete your IGETC or GE certification as well. With these two routes you must take a certain amount of history. Complete those and you are fine.

But if you are talking about a class specific for your major then you need to look up what REQUIRED courses are needed in your department before transfer. You can do this through the cal poly website (I believe this is the correct link for Business Admin: [How to Apply - Admissions - Cal Poly](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)) and then use assist.org to articulate the courses.

Sorry I think I made myself a little to unclear. I already know about IGETC and know my major classes that I need to take. I’ll copy paste off the Cal Poly website to show the part I need help explanation on:

Applicants will receive consideration for any General Education courses completed, but those who have all G.E. (General Education Breadth) or IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) completed will receive maximum consideration in this category. Completion refers to:

Completion of the CSU lower-division GE requirements39 units
Or
Completion of IGETC37 unitsincluding the graduation requirements in History (Area 4F) & Political Science, Government & Legal Institutions (4H).

The part I need help on is the last sentence where they talk about “Graduation requirements in History and Poly Sci (Area 4F and 4H).” Is Cal Poly forcing me to take courses on that subject prior to transfer? Yes they fall under the IGETC category but I’ve already done other classes for Area 4 of IGETC.

Next time put the link as well, I have no idea where this is on the website and what the context meaning is (i.e. you have to have 60 units in order to transfer not 39 or 37, that is unclear). It would be a huge help, so i can fully understand what Cal Poly is trying to express as well.

I would also like to remind that Cal Poly is a state school and not a UC. State schools use mainly the CSU GE Transfer Sheet and not IGETC. IGETC is used mainly for UC transfer.
But Cal Poly has expanded and allowed the option to complete either route to get your lower GE certified.

I am a transfer student as well and I actually completed both the IGETC and CSU GE. For IGETC, you are correct in that there are multiple areas under 4 that you can pick classes from to complete. But for the CSU GE you HAVE to take at least 2 classes from the History/Political Science section. (I took two history courses). It is a requirment for the certification.

Like I said earlier Cal Poly is a state school so I think the info you pasted just comes from CSU GE certification process which does require a history and political science course specifially. I think Cal Poly is just going by the state school transfer guidelines. As far I know if you have the correct number of units, all the required courses completed, and are certified in either IGETC or CSU GE then it all counts and you have met all the requirements.

If you want the most accurate answer you should call or email the school. And if worst comes to worst you take a history class at Cal Poly.

I am also a transfer student from a CCC as a Business Admin major for Fall 2013. I took the CSU GE route, though.

From what I can extrapolate, if you’re taking the IGETC route, Cal Poly wants you to complete one class in Area 4F and one class in Area 4H. Those are your 2/3 courses required for IGETC.
