How big of a difference does the edition number make??

My syllabus for math1000 says I need Algebra for college student edition 8. I went online and found edition 7 along the way and saw it is cheaper (like $30 dif). Sooo, will i run into problems if I get the previous edition insteand of the new one?

It depends on the book. For anatomy&physiology, we’re supposed to have the 8th edition, but I found the 7th for $150 less, so I emailed the prof and she said the differences were minor and I would be fine with the older one.

You will probably be able to figure out what to read from the syllabus and the table of contents.

Take a look at the homework assignments. Are you being asked to do problems from the text, or is the instructor going to give you problems to do on a separate handout? If you have to do problems from the text, do you know someone who will let you look at their book and make sure you are doing the right problems? (The instructor is not going to think making sure you have the right problems in front of you is her job. She’s already done her part of making sure you have the right problems by telling you exactly which textbook the syllabus refers to and telling you exactly which problems in the textbook need to be done.)

@nontraditional: i’ll keep those points into consideration.

anyway, i am thinking of purchasing the ebook versions. any1 ever done that? i got homework due next class so i dont have time to wait for my shipments to arrive. Downloading it to my laptop seems like the best solution right now.

usually the new editions have very minor changes and the problems are changed around so as to avoid exactly what you’re trying to do. sometimes in the department of that class you’re in, there is a copy available for students to use. you can maybe find what the problems are from there to make sure they match the problem from the older edition you have. you can also ask a friend if you want. sometimes the professor might even let you photocopy the problems from the textbook if you go to see her/him for office hours.

i’ve never used an ebook of a textbook. it’s pretty hard to do math problems in front of a screen, at least for me. it’s the one thing i don’t do on my computer, every thing else i take notes and do homework on my computer.
