Do old edition/used books matter?

Hi:
Do you guys think that old edition/used books have big affect on the classes, some disadvantages?
I want to save some money by buying some of the used books online. I don't know if anyone does this. Please give me some advice.

ive never had a professor say it wasn't ok, but sometimes its a big hassle to find something that was reordered in the new book from which your prof assigns reading. also, sometimes material changes from edition to edition. what classes are you taking?

It is a HUGE biatch sometimes - different pagination, chapter layout, and worst - content. It depends on the subject and the book, of course.

If it's not a huge difference or a life/death situation, try and match the edition listed.

Yea, you never know.. it depends on the class. I would email the professor and ask him/her if you can use an older edition. They usually respond quickly and honestly (they understand college students aren't rich)

Thanks for all the feedback.
I'm considering buying How to read and do proofs- 3rd edition and Abstract Algebra- 3rd edition. Both of the required texts are fourth edition. Yeah I think I should write the profs to ask about this.

Many times math books will change problems between editions so as to force students into buying the newest one.
