ffb: Likely letters are unequivocal in stating that your qualifications have been considered and you will be receiving an offer of admission from Yale in April barring anything crazy. Does this clear things up?

yeah… I definitely don’t expect to get one. which is okay. XP

Below is the text of an actual LL mailed to an athlete in 2008. As I stated before, the language is very specific – no reason to confuse with the “please consider applying to Yale” letters.

"Dear XXXXX,

It gives me great pleasure to tell you that we have completed a preliminary review of your application and are awarding it a “likely” rating.

The admissions terminology used here-“likely”-means that you are “likely” to be admitted to Yale when the full admissions committee formally convenes in November, with official notification mailed in mid-December. History suggests that as long as you maintain your present level of performance and there is no other change in your record, this is, in fact, what will happen.

As an accomplished athlete, you have a special skill you are bringing to a community that values it. We think we have built a good athletic ethic at Yale, one based on the belief that athletics can be an important factor in the development of a whole person. As an athlete who has already achieved at a high level, you understand what we mean when we say that. We do not admit only “athletes” to Yale any more than we admit “musicians” or “chemists” or “those who have an unusual record of participation in community service.” We admit people of promise. You have shown the capacity to balance your academic life with a serious commitment to sports. We value that in itself and because we know what discipline and commitment it requires. This letter is an act of faith. It demonstrates that we have confidence in you as a person and in your future and that we are proud to welcome you as a member of our family.

With warmest congratulations from me and from all of my staff on your accomplishments and with good wishes for the remaining days of your high school year,

Sincerely yours,

Jeffrey B. Brenzel
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions"

^omg that is amazing. thanks for posting!

Received the same type of ll about 3 weeks ago!

got a likely from yale 2 weeks ago saying the same thing.

uh, i’m so jealous. Lucky you, guys!

^you actually believe them? lmao

tbird did state that he or she got a likely letter before T26E4 posted that letter online. It’s quite possible that she did receive it. And fatfrog is an athlete, I think, though whether he/she got a likely from Yale is impossible to say.

Oh, yes, I didn’t notice their post counts. They can be ■■■■■■. LOL I feel better now. :D

lol they probably are ■■■■■■. ask them to upload a picture of their letter and they’ll probably never respond xD

Hehe it seems that everybody with less than five posts got likely letters this year ;)

Seriously though, I wish I had some reassurance. At this point I kind of hope I either get accepted or rejected.

Counting down from Nov 1st, I don’t know what I’ll do if I have to count another four months.

One week left guys…xD

I know somebody was deferred SCEA, and got a likely letter early February.
SCEA applicants never get likely letters. It makes sense, do the math.

^^ Wow! Did that person do something amazing between November- January that made the adcoms more confident about the applicant than during the SCEA admission process? I mean I heard that if you got in SCEA than you would have gotten in RD, and since Yale only gives like 100 -200 likely letters I would think that person won an International or national competition after he/ she got deferred to make the adcoms change their minds!

^yeah I’m curious about that too. that’s weird!

No no. Guys a person gets a likely letter because adcom feel that they will admit that student regardless of the number of applicants that year. But we all know it is to get the student into New Haven not Cambridge.

He said he just got it. I was really not pleased, but his application must have been overlooked. Either that or Yale had some inside look into him because his app must have been shiny. It happens you know, when they give your counsellor a call and your outside rec writers a letter via email.

I think that thread has been taken off

You do not have to send anythin extra to please them. I doubt that would do anything.

Like I said SCEA applicants do not get likelies. Only regular pool applicants.

BWB: I was just told that some SCEA applicants in our area did receive Likely Letters. Maybe these were athletic recruits, maybe not. However it does appear that Yale uses the post October window to start identifying and targeting its most prized applicants: SCEA or RD

I know a recruited athlete for softball that got a likely letter as a SCEA applicant. It is possible but I am pretty sure very very rare.

Oh, lol, then I am wrong. Last year the likelies came after mid Jan-ish I think. Thats why I said that.

I still think that likelies would be given because the student is really good academically, and not just a sport jock.
