Quick Facts about "Likely Letters"

harvardlite, it’s larmon’s likely letter scanned into the computer so we can see that he’s legit.

thx. wht does it say?? anything special… (of course its special, and i wish i cud read it)

nah, how about an iTampon?

oh stupefy, you clever thing you.

seriously, larmoney, congrats on the LL. sits and pines

thx. wht does it say?? anything special… (of course its special, and i wish i cud read it) ???

just stating the obvious, but thank you ;)

haha. I love the banter that goes on at CC sometimes  it’s almost enough to balance out the plethora of annoying people here! :P

Do International Students get Likelies?

BTW if they post these likelies only by March, the students would probably receive the letter only after the official decisions are announced.

Karottu: officially they can send them out up to the middle of March but that doesn’t make much sense does it? There would be no reason for a LL to be sent in mid - March to someone who finds out their decision on April 1.

So are likelies sent to international students?

karottu: I don’t know if LLs get sent to internationals. This I do know however and I can’t stress it enough: Likely Letters are extremely rare and NO ONE besides the most recruited athletes should even THINK of receiving one. Like I first noted 200-300 LLs are sent by Yale any given year. IF half of them (and this is a stretch) went to non-athlete recruits, that equates to 100-150 LLs each season. This year, Yale rec’d approx 25800 applications.

That means statistically, 0.04 to 0.06% of applicants will receive a non-athlete Likely Letter. Now you tell me what person continues to ponder if they are in the .04 to .06% of a pool of applicants like Yale receives? Should ANY person pine away, seeking one of these golden tickets? Should any person waste 5 minutes of energy worrying about if he/she is the .04 to .06% of a group of 26000 top performing applicants? (I’m not talking about your high school peers, I’m talking about the applicant pool for Yale)

Basically, no one should be hoping for Likely letters. If you happen to get one, by all means, congratulations to you. But if you don’t, know that 1700-1800 kids get accepted without ever receiving one.

I guess you are right.
Being accepted by these colleges, in itself, is a difficult task. And I believe it is even more difficult for internationals.

But it would be funny if a person received the likely letter after the results are published online.

Intl students DO get likelies, I got one very recently, and to my utter shock (considering the insane time differences) I also received a wonderful call from my area admissions officer today.

However, listen to T26E4 - statistically likelies are in the extreme minority, and likelies for internationals are the extreme extreme minority. I’d cite the old adage - prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

And definitely don’t over-rationalise or over-strategise the college admissions process, second guessing every little thing. Its amazing to get into such fantastic colleges (or the potential of), but everyone can very well live a full, wonderful life regardless of where they go for college.

unlikely letters would be awful. hahaha

Just got a likely letter!!! I can’t believe it!    It was in a small envelope :S, so I had no idea what it was! It’s dated march 8, but got here like on the 16… slow post offices…    :D

Good luck to everyone on april 1st!!!

@Emmanuelcarro: What school was it if you don’t mind me asking? And CONRATS!!!

Someone posted about his/her sister getting one from Duke last year and then getting rejected, but in 99.9999999% of cases, it’s basically guaranteed admission.

Unlikely letters might actually be good, imo… saves you the useless hoping xP

Getting a likely letter only to be rejected must be the worst feeling in the world. I literally think I would cry.

^ I KNOW, right? :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: And imagine if you’d already told your friends/family about getting in to “X” school… and then didn’t…

Here is the link to the post, btw, if anyone was wondering. It’s the fifth post down, by glassesarechic: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/868297-likely-letters-3.html

But never fear. I’m fairly sure it doesn’t happen often. Liiike, miniscule :)

@ fuzzyfirebunny: Thanks! From Yale :)
