Quick FAFSA question - household member

Hi Everyone,
Our daughter will be a college freshman in the fall and we are preparing to fill out the FAFSA. She has an older brother who graduated from college in May, 2010 who lived with us all of 2010 but moved into his own apartment on January 1st of this year.

Do we count him as a household member on the FAFSA since he lived with us during all of 2010 (he did not find a full-time job until the end of July and we provided most of his support until then) or should we not count him because he is no longer living with us? Thanks!

Since he isn’t a household member NOW, I do not believe you count him.

I would agree with that- however he will show up as a dependent on your taxes for 2010, so I would think, that may make your EFC more reasonable.

Being a dependent OR NOT on you taxes has nothing to do with the financial aid forms.

No. He is not your household member. They have to be going to be in your household in the upcoming school year (or would be considered a dependent for FAFSA in the upcoming year)

Thanks so much to everyone who replied. We will not count him as a household member.
