The orientation page lists a few orientation dates for honors. Some of those dates overlap the separate college's orientation dates. For example: Honors orientation on June 5-6, and College of Journalism orientation on June 5. Can you do both or is that impossible?

Also, is going to the honors orientation a must-do? They only have 3 dates, and for one of those we are going to be out of the country.

Thanks!

...Or, is the honors orientation a replacement for the other orientation?

So many questions, LOL!

somebodynew is the guy who can answer your question on anything related to orientation!

I'll send him a PM. Thanks!

Also, last year we had to do some juggling--D was out of the country for 2 of the orientation dates, and still in school for the first one. We called and talked to the head of the orientation program and she was able to help out. The earlier in the summer the better, in terms of course (and decent time) availability....

oregonianmom, in case you don't connect with somebodynew (whom we met at S's orientation last summer!), they are purposely scheduled so that there is an honors orientation and a scholars orientation on the same dates as your child's individual college. The intent is for students to attend their college's special orientation session for honors and scholars students.

^Great, thanks Worrywart and Astrophysicsmom!

Based on the experience of DS's friends at UMD, earlier is better.

Great point! S attended the second scholars orientation for his college and found that certain required courses had already closed out. (Course registration is done with your child's advisor during orientation.) On the plus side, the registration software is really terrific and will indicate which core requirements and which scholars requirements are met by a chosen course. It also matches your child's AP credits with the appropriate core requirements that have been satisfied (e.g. humanities, math, science, etc.) Finally, the program actually issues a warning if it's not feasible to get from one class to the next on time.

Testudo (the course registration program) severely underestimates the speed at which UMD students are able to walk lol. Though walking to/from the English building is a pain from most places on campus...guess that's why English majors are all in great shape.

Yeah, feel free to ask me about anything Orientation-related. We're currently working on making it all run more smoothly and efficiently. We're booking rooms, getting speakers, making plans, and training our staff (they take a 3-credit course spring semester that teaches them everything they need to know about students, parents, orientation, and the university).
