Quick Question about present/past tense

When you are writing an essay about an autobiography, would you use present or past tense.

Like...if you are talking about the autobiography of Benjy.

In Benjamin Franklin's case, knowledge opens the doors to freedom

or

In Benjamin Frankin's case, knowledge opened the doors to freedom.

i'd probably go with past tense, since Ben Franklin is dead. But then, i do tend to get yelled at a lot for using the wrong tense, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'd say past, but I think it depends on the context. Show me the paragraph you used that thought in and I'll be able to make a better call.

past tense
