Quick question -- deferred (UNC). Any help appreciated ASAP!

I was just deferred from UNC-CH (and it seems like I was pretty much the only one!) and I have a few questions about getting in.

I am female, OOS, 2180 SAT, 3.8 GPA...until this semester.

I got a 3.43 GPA this semester and clearly need to make up for this.

My battle strategy:

-Write them a nice letter saying how much I want to go there.
-Re-take the ACT shooting for a 33 or 34.
-Send in some clips of work I've done for my (regional, medium-sized, award-winning) paper for my internship.

But I can't forget it's a large university without the time to waste on letters and newspaper articles and the ACT is the only thing that could improve my application. Is that true? I wouldn't want to waste time doing things that won't help.

Will visiting campus help? I live far away, but we could go if necessary.

They also said additional letters of recommendation are not necessary. I do have one person who could give me a spectacular recommendation (he taught me at summer camp) but I wouldn't want to send it in if it won't help AT ALL.

Basically, will doing any of this help my application?

ALSO: If I do well on the ACT, how would I report that to schools? I wouldn't know until March 1 or so, would that be too late? Or should I just report it (using the ACT form) to my reach schools and cross my fingers? If not, would sending in a copy once I receive it work?

Thank you so much!

I also got deferred from UNC-CH early action. I have a 3.8 and a 2100 and it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who got left out! :) I talked to my counselor about retaking the SATs and she said that what would probably help more was sending in any award-winning materials. Since I'm involved in science research, I'm sending in my Intel paper and the results from competitions that are coming up in the next few weeks. I would strongly suggest sending in your internship paper. If they don't read it, they don't read it. But it can't hurt. I live in New York so I haven't visited either, but I was wondering about that also. Good luck!

I don't think the ACT score will reach them on time - their deadline for new info is February 12th. You'll probably have to call and make an arrangement with someone for this to be possible.

Remember that applying OOS at UNC-CH is VERY difficult for anyone since I think it's 81% of their acceptances have to be given to instate students but only like 20% of their apps are from instate so instate is almost a guarantee (w/ right gpa, scores, etc) and OOS is a crapshoot. I took a campus tour and we were told that demonstrated interest is not a factor in admissions since they know so many kids apply from OOS and can't make the trip.

My friend who was deferred just called UNC and they said they're only accepting scores from December and before.

i was deferred from UNC OOS also lol....but I think that your semester grades are really going to kill you.
