Quick question on AP courses over the summer.

I want to take AP stats over the summer because some of my friends are doing it. How does that work though?
Do you just complete the course and receive your grade at the end? Also, do you have to wait for nine months just to take the AP Exam???

Also whats a better scenario, taking the AP course without the exam just for the GPA Boost or taking the AP Exam without the course.
