Diversity is something that’s important to me in my college search, but I’m having a hard time measuring it. While many schools boast of their cultural/ethnic/racial diversity, students on review sites seem to say otherwise. It’s causing me some difficulty, especially since I’m applying to mostly small liberal arts colleges. (where I feel a lack of diversity will be a little more evident than a large state university)
Right now, many schools are experiencing protests over longstanding lack of administrative support for students of color. I would look to see what’s going on at the schools you’re looking at. Are there groups actively talking about racial issues? What are they saying? Online school newspapers will likely help you get a sense of this.
The common data set for each school lists the breakdown of students, so start there. Then, look at the various affinity groups on campus, contact the president of one, and ask how active it is. Then look at the student newspaper from the school (many are on line) and see what issues they are writing about. Then look at the faculty page of a department you are interested in, and see how diverse the department is. And then try to find out how diverse the board of trustees is. If a university lists their notable alumni, look for what sort of representation is on there–it will tell you which students they really value. A half hour online can tell you a lot about diversity on a campus.
But don’t rely only on one person’s view on a college ratings website.
Look at socioeconomic diversity too: What percent of students are receiving financial aid? What percent of the student body attended private vs. public high schools?
And I second looking at student newspapers to get a good sense of the local culture and what’s on students’ minds (several issues - you don’t want to be overly influenced by one article on one particular day).
Diversity-is a buzz word …what are you looking for …diversity of thought? eskimos, people from nepal?
and why? find the best school for you. maybe stop and think why “diversity” is important to you…is it because you hear it again and again and people tell you it is important? pick a school with all around happy students and supportive caring professors(which is what you will find at most LAC’s)
leave the buzz word out of your choice. on the other hand if you visit a school and your gut says you do not like it that is much more important. (whatever the reason)
speaking of LAC’s may I suggest looking at muhlenberg college.
I visited about four schools, but I decided to only apply to one. I was really impressed with the academics and how involved the president seemed to be with most of the students. It is predominantly white, but they bring in a lot of international students which definitely seems to enrich the idea of cultural awareness.
I know it’s a buzz word, but what isn’t when looking at colleges anymore? It’s important to me because I enjoy being exposed to people of different backgrounds-- unlike my high school. I tend to have an easier time making friends with those who are a little more interested in exploring new cultures and places.
Thank you all for the great advice. It really gives me a lot to think about
