Quick Question

I live in NYC. Do you think it is worth applying to Columbia because of this or should I aplly somewhere else like Dartmouth? I mean would I lose the excitement of living in a new place and hanging out in new places?

depends on how much you like NYC and of course applying doesnt mean you will get in

If you're getting tired of NYC (which is kind of odd), I think your best bet is applying to Dartmouth but it also doesn't mean a guaranteed acceptance.

Well I know that. I don't want to spend time on schools that I would not enjoy IF ( abig IF) I got in.

Have you visited Columbia?

Yes numerous times. I loved the Compatcness of campus. I visited during early April. It was a a nice day out and people were lying on the the lawn on towels talking with firends, playing soccer, having picnics and I think there was a band. It semmed like a really fun place to be. Plus the street fairs outside Columbia have amazing food.

Haha yes!^.....I hate the fact that they're currently doing cunstruction over there though. I have no clue what its for. I remember tripping over some wild kid running around Alfred Lerner Hall. LOL

But ummmm you really need to have like some kind of over-night stay in they're dorms. Pay scrupulous attention to the way you feel when you wake up in the morning and look outside the window.

&& another thing, go outside like around 7 am and take a 4 block jog and come back to the campus. See how you feel. Also, talk to people about Columbia. Eat at they're restaurants. Stuff your face with pizza. Hide some in your boxers to bring back to the campus if you have to. Take advantage of being there. Thats how I developed my love for the school

I agree, you should eat at they are restaurants and stay at they are dorms

shakes head .....i hope you fall in love with other schools as well buddy

Then thats not love if you're falling for more than one. ** Love is for one thing only. You're basically cheating on Columbia then.

i doubt columbia will mind very much in your case

c'mon shraf, leave him alone and stay on topic.

OP - Interesting question. Here are my thoughts on it in no particular structure:

You already know the city and know you like living there. You're familiar with the subway, the noise, the attractions, the pace. that's a plus.

It can be a good idea to use college as an opportunity to see the world. There are a couple of reasons for this: (1) Going to school too close to your parents means you end up going home a lot, which sounds nice but would get lame quickly. (2) You don't know if you'd like living in the suburbs or the country or the west coast or england until you try it. (3) Some might say that life is about accumulating a variety of experiences.

I wouldn't have gone to harvard unless it was the only school that accepted me. They spared me that, uh, indignity, but I still felt pretty strongly about it. I was driving to work every day right through harvard square, it felt so empty and joyless for me.

On the other hand, NYC was perfect distance - close enough to boston that I could go home sometimes (chinatown bus! $10 each way until they hiked it junior year), but not so close that I felt like anyone was looking over my shoulder. Perhaps the reverse relationship would feel right to you, given how many colleges are in massachusetts.

Columbia is awesome. Other schools are awesome too, but if you feel totally at home at columbia, moreso than anywhere else, don't let the location stop you.

Obviously apply, if you're a decent match on paper. Having the option can't hurt.

unless you get denied which is a waste of $70.00 shaking my head

but ummmmm collegehopeful apply and I hope you get in
Good luck!

Yea I will apply though.

quote Going to school too close to your parents means you end up going home a lot, which sounds nice but would get lame quickly

having the option of going home whenever you want is actually very helpful in adjusting to college....and when it becomes lame you just cut down on going home.

NOt unless you're parents coerce you to keep coming back & Visiting like i'm sure my parents would (especially my feening father)
Thats why i sometimes rethink applying ED to Columbia over Amherst because I know for sure its either I don't get to live in Dorms or if I do I'm going to have to come home & visit.

Why doesn't he coerce you to take spelling lessons?

conf

Columbia2002 did you really go to Columbia? Its very sad that you post all this bs if you have a Columbia education.

LMFAOOOOOOOOO
collegehopeful78 I highly Doubt he goes to Columbia
For Columbia to accept someone like him, it makes me want to reconsider going to that school!

if you are questioning whether C02 went to columbia then you are insane or haven't read any of his more informative posts.

and no, So Authentic, noone is impressed with you because you supposedly speak a second language (that or you know how to use alta vista translator)....the fact that you are trying so hard to impress a bunch of nameless faceless people online is sad and laughable at best. The only thing i'm shocked at is your ridiculous attitude and desire to be validated.
