I was wondering how difficult is was to get the full 4k for the FSEOG. I have an EFC of Zero. Would I have a good chance at getting the FSEOG? If it's relevant, I plan to attend the University of Michigan (I'm in-state) next year and I'll apply for aid as early as possible to maximize my chances. Do you think I have a good chance at getting the full 4k?

I currently attend community college and I have the Pell Grant. Again, my EFC is Zero. Also, my mom only makes about 19k a year.

SEOG is one of three federal aid programs called campus based aid. This means each school is given a certain limited amount of funds for that program and decides how to allocate it. Once he funds have been awarded they can get no more.

Each school sets its own criteria for how to disburse the funds and what maximum they will set for their award. My son’s school set a maximum SEOG of $200 a year. My daughter’s school set a maximum of $2000. Both schools required a 0 EFC. Both had more eligible students than they had funds and quickly ran out of funding meaning many students that met the criteria did not get any funds.

Whether you will get SEOG and how much, will depend on your school’s criteria for awarding it, what they have set their maximum as, where in line you are when they start awarding FA. What other people may have received, especially at other schools, will have no impact on whether you will receive it or how much you will receive.

edited to add: The 2 schools we have experience with, it made no difference whether you were a transfer student or a freshman. But, the rules are set by each school.

Son’s school awarded full $4000, daughter OOS public awarded $2000. Oldest daughter years ago also received the full amount at an in-state public. EFC of 0. School specific. None were Univ of Michigan.

Since it is up to each school to determine how SEOG is administered, a phone call to the financial aid office at University of Michigan will be the simplest way to find out the maximum SEOG that is awarded there.

My kids were both instate at their schools. The years they got the SEOG they had 0 EFCs and the amounts they got were the maximums their schools would award ($2000 for one, $200 for the other). My daughter’s last year, she had a 0 EFC and did not get any SEOG because the school ran out of funds.

What matters is what your school’s policy for SEOG is.

No, she actually filed very early that year in January (the earliest we ever filed). She went in and asked and when they first looked at her file they were puzzled she had not got it. Then when they looked a bit closer they said it was because, as she was selected for verification, by the time we submitted the verification documents they had run out of SEOG funds (also WS funds which she had had previously). It was a bit frustrating. We were away when they first posted in her online account that she had been selected for verification and even though we did it as soon as we got back (probably a little less than 2 weeks after it was posted), the funding was exhausted. Her school does not do a preliminary award while waiting for verification documents.

In the spring semester they did give her a little SEOG as they had some funds come available.

I worked at a state U that had a maximum SEOG award of $1000, and it was awarded to 0 EFC only. The fund ran out EARLY … it was awarded by computer based on date of FAFSA application.
