Quick Questions About W&M

I have a few quick questions about parking / cars at William and Mary. I am aware of the rule limiting parking to only Juniors and Seniors so I was just wondering wether Freshman and Sophmores generally just don't drive, or pay to store their cars in the town of Williamsburg (if that is even an option)? Seems like it'd be kinda terrible to not have a car.. any current students without cars on campus, do you find it bearable? or is there a LOT of walking? And when you want to go home for a weekend or what not (assuming you live in Virginia), do you have to take the train?

You really don't need a car. I didn't have a car all of freshmen year, and the only time I missed it was when I wanted to go home. Honestly, there's really not that many places in Williamsburg to go, and the bus (that you can ride for free) goes to almost all of them (Target, Food Lion, Movies, Outlets, etc). As far as around campus... campus is pretty compact. No one who has a car drives to class if they live on campus.

The train station / greyhound station (same place) is a 5-10 minute walk from campus.

If you live in Virginia, on break weekends you will likely be able to find someone with a car going to the same place you are, who would be willing to give you a ride for some gas money. And, often on other weekends as well. There is an online rideboard, and you'll know people in different organizations with cars.

This year as a sophomore, I have a car for volunteer work. I don't know of anywhere in Williamsburg that you can pay to store your car. There is some street parking fairly close to campus, but it's very, very limited.

My D is a freshman at William and Mary. She had some concerns about going down there without a car---like cutting off her air supply. But she has managed quite well without one. At least I have heard no complaints. She does a lot of socializing especially during weekends in and around campus, gets rides when needed from upperclass friends, uses the bus for day-to-day shopping purposes, had gotten access to bikes when needed--but says she does not want one down there. We live in Northern Va and she took the train up for Fall Break--only time she came home so far---quite a few W&M students took the train that night and I guess there was sort of a party atmosphere on it.

the train is full of W&M students on breaks

... and the greyhound has a large bunch from W&M, ODU and CNU. And Richmond and VCU once for the trip from Richmond to DC.

I am from MA, and am a freshman here, and I just brought a bike down. I can get pretty much anywhere I want to go, and plus it's good exercise. Usually MA kids take one of 2 flights out of Newport News on breaks so the plane rides can be fun. Not having a car is not a problem for me.
