Quirkyness

I recently heard about how Brown is really interested in unique and “quirky” students. What do they mean as in “quirky”? Do they do really unique extracurriculars, have specific personalities, really shy/odd, hyped out about everything?

I’m just starting out on the college admissions process and trying to see what schools out there fit me.

Thanks guys!

I would say that they can most easily determine your quirkiness or who you are based on your essay. The same goes for all schools. Your essays are highly important.

Of course, your ECs can tell them about who you are, but many people do an EC for the sake of doing it and listing it on their app, not because they like it, and admissions know this fact by now, which is why your essay is becoming increasingly important.

Most importantly, you need to be yourself in writing your essay. If your teachers don't think you were quirky and you try being quirky in your essays, admission officers will know and that won't be good.

So just be yourself and hope for the best! There's nothing you can do now but wait for your time when you do your app. I know because I'm a senior and I was just like you back last year - scouring college admission forums for help on choosing colleges.

And guess what? By being on this great forum, you're ahead! Give yourself a pat on the back. It'll pay back it the long run.

Now I'm going to give you a piece of extra advice:

Based on personal experience, I also highly recommend you to enroll in some pre-college program. I was really interested in Brown, so I enrolled in Summer@Brown, because I wanted a taste of how life at Brown is like. I can tell you that even though it cost a few thousands of dollars, it was really worth it, because I met tons of new people, learned alot, and it intensified my desire for Brown. So this year, I applied to Brown for 4 more years of that experience. Try it, even you may like it --- in fact, you will like it, because I've never heard of anyone who was unhappy at Summer@Brown. The only unhappy part is when they tell you to pack your things and go home. Seriously.

Here are some resources for Summer@Brown:

It's not a very competitive program, but you should apply early in case your program of choice fills up. I know that the econ and bio programs fill up fast, because that's what Brown is more known for.[/li][/ul]

If you have any more questions about the college admissions process, feel free to PM me. I'm more than happy to help, and I'll be a good resource to have because I've experienced the process myself now.

Good luck, and happy exploring!
