I was recommended Brown the most by my teachers/counsellor etc because of its “out-there-ness”. However, when I read the app essays, I was a bit disheartened to find very bland and straight forward topics. I wish they had a way in which I could come out as “spacey” better than just “Describe your interests” and whatnot. I want to write a poem, do you think its too much of a risk? And if im “out there” with this, do you thik that they will think I have avoided the prompt?

Your main personal statement essay is where you have the chance to be "out there," since there is really no set topic. "Describe your interests" is for your activities to speak for themselves.

Brown's had those very same essays for decades -- nothing's changed. I've seen poems submitted for the personal statement; I've seen essays written as plays. Sometimes students who write "out-there" essays are accepted; sometimes not. Depends on how well the essay is written. The personal statement is so wide open that you can write pretty much anything you want.

However, I do feel that there are fewer quirky, edgy students at Brown than there used to be.

lol, i hardly think the application is a reflection of the quirkiness of a school.
