at my school, band is serious business. our symphonic band (including me) won the state festival last year and we played carnegie hall the year before that. the catch is that our director is evil which isn't so bad for those people who enjoy playing their instrument or have friends in the program or just have thick skin or whatever.
i've already spent three years in band. three years of intense work. three years of crazy stress and tears. three years of being that awkward outcast. three years of condescending looks and pitiful small talk...
i'm not cut out for band and i in no way enjoy it (if you couldn't tell). so i asked my parents if next year, as a senior, i could drop band and take some other elective instead.
they said that dropping such an accomplished activity in my senior year would show a lack of commitment and make colleges hesitant to admit me.
but i'll also have four years of swimming, science olympiad, and math team on my application, three years of french club, and two of NHS and scholastic bowl. isn't that enough commitment? and don't i deserve this one small joy my senior year?

my question is: how bad can quitting band my senior year really be?

If you hate band so much, then quit! Your parents should understand; you shouldn’t have to subject yourself to something you despise. Focus on what you like to do instead. Best of luck. :)

Hey,
I’ve played with my HS Symphonic Band since 8th grade in middle school. I am a junior, and have gotten tired of it. I really don’t like the routine of it, and the teacher this year is just a dick to me. He demoted me from Wind Ensemble (which I auditioned for and got in) because I was not willing to pay to go on the trip to New York. So I have indicated on my senior schedule request that I want to resign from the band. I have the same concerns as you regarding what colleges will think.

I am a graduating senior and I quit band this year. It was the best choice of my life. I no longer enjoyed the practices, rehearsals, the time the people, etc. I was slightly worried about colleges disliking my choice to quit band my senior year. I have been admitted into all 5 of the schools I applied for my top choice being the University of Florida. Quitting band worked out wonderfully for me and I hope it will for you too! Best of luck
