I know MIT explicitly states that it reviews applicants without comparison to other students from the same school or region, but is there a limit to this? Generally, MIT accepts 2-3 out of 10-15 applicants from my school every year, but my year has so many more qualified candidates (at least 10 students applying in just early action) than previous classes.
So is there a cap? MIT says no, but realistically, I can't see more than 3 or 4 from my school being accepted (even though so many more are qualified).

There’s no cap. I promise, Admissions is not lying to you.

Ok, thank you! Reassuring in this college app season

While I agree that there is no hard cap it also seems quite unlikely that MIT will go from accepting 2-3 students per year from a high school to accepting 10. Admittedly I would guess this is largely because it would be rare for the number of MIT-caliber students at school to jump that much in one year. But I also think that even in the event where the number of MIT-caliber students did jump that much in one year it would still be slightly harder to get in although I’m not overly confident in this.

awh baebae you sound nervous

@UMTYMP: Yeah, that’s kinda what I was thinking
Not that it’s much indication on how qualified my class year has been compared to previous years, but here’s something: 9 NM semifinalists from class of '13, 20 NM semifinalists from class of '14

That is true. It is unlikely. But it is not unheard of. Something odd like that happens on a regular basis in an admissions pool as large as MIT’s. But it would be foolish to try to count on it.

I am not associated with admissions in any way, but I fail to see why there would ever be any kind of quota. MIT is after the best applicants it can find. Although diversity is a desired theme (IMHO), having 10 students from one HS when you are giving admittance to something like 1500 applicants will hardly make a dent in the diversity issue.

I would also think that a number of good applicants from one HS isn’t as rare as you might think. The good students could push each other to the point that you have a cluster of good applicants.
