3 kids from my school got accepted. is that rare?

13 kids from my son's class of 120 were accepted 2 years ago. (Yes, 10% of the class.) MIT has no quotas on number accepted from any given school. I would say it's not common for most schools to have multiple acceptances, but it's not all that rare either.

so far at least 16 from my school have gotten in this year (early and regular).might hear about more people as the week goes on though.

The number was 16 the year before and 13 the year before that.

But to answer your question, it is relatively rare - someone put the data into a spreadsheet off the admitted students guestbook for EA and there were only a handful of schools with 3 or more admitted

And the vast majority of schools in the country have 0 admitted, of course.

In my year, five from my graduating class were admitted.

Though, my graduating class had 1000 people in it.
