R1A? What are they?

What is the purpose of R1A classes? Do they fulfill a certain breadth requirement?

they fulfill the first half of your reading and composition requirement

Ic. Is it recommended to use H.S. credit to pass out of the requirement?
Can the required 1 yr of english for med school be fulfilled via seminars, or is this part of the art/lit breadth requirement and the seminars specifically elective credits?

R1A/R1B isn't part of the breadth requirement. it's a whole separate requirement. Med schools want 1 year of english, meaning R1A and R1B. seminars can't be used to fulfill the reading composition requirement.

I read IB scores of 5 or higher can fulfill both halves? Doesnt that mean I can skip R1A and B? Is it still recommended to take them just for med school requisites, or are there other recommended courses aside from English R1A and B?

Yeah, bump urd0rkk's last post. Excellente question about med school requirement!

What? Don't English R1A/R1B satisfy the Reading & Comprehension requirement (At least that's what it says for the College of Engineering)?

as well as for college of letters and science... i think for the whole curriculum vitae at berkeley for the matter...

I'm going to be applying as a Transfer Student, I will be entering Haas Schools of Business (If I get accepted) as a Junior. I need to fulfill the following as well:

Literature/Writing Requirement (formerly Additional English)
This requirement is in addition to the English/R & C requirement listed above and must be satisfied by the completion of one course in which literature or writing is studied, not including the courses used to satisfy the R & C requirement. Choose a writing or literature course from the Creative Writing, English or Literature departments. The course must be UC-transferable for at least 3 semester or 4 quarter units. Which writing or literature course you take for this requirement is up to you.

English/Reading and Composition (R&C). You must satisfy this requirement by completing courses comparable to both Berkeley's English R1A and English R1B. Students at schools other than California community colleges should go to http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/fp/29RCQuest.pdf and download a copy of the R&C Questionnaire to be filled out by your professors.

I've taken the following:

1101 COLLEGE WRITING I (3 credits) Emphasis on improving skills and effectiveness in written communication through critical reading of literature, other means of observation, and extensive writing; course deals with developing authorial voice and adapting that voice to academic audiences; course covers rudiments of citing sources. Includes an oral component. Liberal Education Category 1

1102 COLLEGE WRITING II (3 credits) Continued emphasis on composition with concentration on use of sources, research methods, and preparation of persuasive research papers. Includes an oral component. Prerequisite: ENGL 1101. Liberal Education Category 1

Will that fulfill any of those requirements?

I've always thought they were two different requirements. There are the university requirements, which include AC, history, and reading and composition, then there are the college level requirements, which for L&S, are the seven-breadth requirements (engineers don't have to do seven-course breadth). Finally, there are your major requirements, which are the classes you must take to graduate. The R1A's aren't used to fulfill the seven course breadth (they might, I don't know), but are used to fulfill the reading and composition requirement.
