No, freshman do not usually get hired to RA, at least not first semester. You have to be interviewed, be known, have a qualifying GPA, go through extensive training about handling student issues, etc, and it’s a job that requires a good deal of responsibility if you do it well. Not all colleges offer free room and board for RA’ing. Some pay like a work study job, etc.

Teachandmom is right, with the possible exception of students dorming at a cc. Sometimes, freshmen can become RAs.

Yes, it is a good deal, but many students see that it is a good deal, so competition is pretty steep. And the job is a tough one. You have to be willing to write up/fine friends, work late nights when you’re on duty, handle the educational programming for your floor, etc. D’s school offers free room, but not board, and a small stipend. Watch the RAs at your school freshman year to determine if you really want to be one.

D1s school gave her free room and partial board. The other benefit was that these benefits were non-taxable. She RAed as a sr so it wasn’t applicable, but there was a thread recently that showed the possibility it could affect the subsequent year’s FA (do a Search here for RA and you’ll find it).
