race effect on SATs?

Hello all,
I was just wondering the extent to which a person’s race affects the consideration of his or her SAT score. I have a 2340 SAT (740 critical reading), but my counselor says because I’m Asian I need to have a 2380 or above to have a chance at the top few schools out there. Is it worth retaking (I’ve already taken it 3 times) or should I just focus on other aspects of my application?

I want to shake your GC! Go do something you enjoy! If you do not get accepted, it will not be over those 40 pts!

Yeah, your GC is wrong.

So what country is your GC from?

^ I bet $20 the answer is “The United States of America.”

Even if you’re held to a higher standard for being asian, there’s little to be gained in retaking the SAT once you’ve topped 2300.

Go focus on other parts of your application.

And here we go again, the age old “2340 isn’t good enough” coupled with “I’m Asian.”

OP, if you really are a top kid and want a top college, go learn what the colleges themselves say they look for. Otherwise, you’re spinning your wheels. It’s not all about stats.

I don’t think decisions are being made on scores once you reach 2300 so I would spend the time working on something that will make you stand out in a positive light to admissions officers.

Please tell your guidance counselors to join CC and post that their students’ 2340 SATs are subpar and need to be retaken. We’d be happy to help educate them.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’ll take that bet.

Let’s not belabor the point; the definitive answer has already been given - no you should not retake a 2340, and you should focus on other aspects of your application. The difference between 2340 and 2380 or 2400 will not be the difference between acceptance and rejection.

Also, as another note, my friend was accepted to Cornell with a 34 ACT (like 2280ish) for engineering. She was guess what? ASIAN! If you are rejected, it’s going to be way more than your test scores.
