I got a 2310 on my SAT (800 CR, 760 M, 750 W). I'm applying to HYP and other elite schools. My application is overall good but with a weakness in extracurricular activities (only 3 done during the schoolyear but a lot of summer activities). The reason I'm thinking about retaking is the Writing score - that's usually my strongest subject, and I know I have a shot at an 800. Is it worth it to retake?

ick. i frown on you. retake that suckaaaaaa.

Bepieve it or not… Once you hit 2250 universities discourage you to take the test again. This is actually true. Go on youtube and type in ivy league admission officers.

how about 2250 superscored^^

Is that really true for all cases?
a 650 for CR and 800 math and 800 Writing is a 2250. Should the kid retake? Only common sense can decide.

As for OP, I think its up to you. Taking the test twice is ok but three times is a little risky because the common app only offers 3 SAT score spaces lol. But in all seriousness, you proably should not retake.

One last thing, if you are Asian, you are in a pickle. Id strongly suggest not to retake if you are asian.

Thx for the advice, I think I’m not going to retake. I’d be better off putting more time in summer activities and getting a headstart on college essays.

If you can boost your score 50 points in one section then I would retake it.

why is it bad to retake if you’re asian, CC’er?

How does this have anything to do with race? But no, do not retake.

Well, I got a 2310 my first time and took it a second time and got a 2400. But I would only recommend retaking it if you’re confident you’ll get in the 2370-2400 range. How confident are you that you can repeat an 800 CR and raise your writing score to 800, while maintaining or improving your math score? And I would only do it if you feel like you don’t need much more prep.

well, I forgot to mention that i got a 36 on the ACT, if that makes a difference. I’ve heard that SAT matters more than ACT for Ivies, which is why I asked. But I think I’m keeping my decision intact.

no, they do not favor one over the other. If you already have a 36 on your ACT, WHY THE HECK ARE YOU TAKING THE SAT! Your chances of admission will decrease instead even if you manage to raise your SAT score.

I took the SAT before the ACT. So are you saying I shouldn’t submit the SAT score?

yes fraudulence. If you decide to submit your SAT scores, you MUST send everything listed on your collegeboard website, including the subject tests; however, if you decide to submit your ACT score, universities will neglect your SAT scores, or you don’t have to notify them at all.

well that stinks, since i have to submit subject tests. hopefully the colleges will use my ACT rather than the SAT I for admissions purposes.

if you want the best possible chance at a given school. Have a higher score. What the hell was that person talking about with not taking it again after 2250? If you think you can get higher then go for it. A 2290 got me into MIT. I have no idea how that works out but I’m happy.
