"Race" in College Admission FAQ & Discussion 7

Matt: google “white flight”. It’s not about swans either.

Kindergarten to 2nd grade: my class photos : all white. Busing starts. (google that too) My class becomes 80% black. What happened? Tons of “for sale” signs in my neighborhood. The local Catholic school got tons of new students.

If you can wriggle out of your anger and sense that the “brownskins” are taking away your stuff, matt, maybe you’ll learn that race in America is a very complex matter with many degrees. As it is, you just seem to be yelling but not interested in discourse.

Read my edit

Bob Marley spoke to all of us when he said: “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds.” All of us are to some extent enslaved by our poor attitudes, self-imposed limitations, etc. I respectfully suggest that the idea that a person cannot achieve something in this nation due to their skin color is the epitomy of mental slavery. You defeat yourself before you can even begin. The truth is that people are, seeming by nature, cruel. Skinny people mock fat people. Beautiful people are prejudiced against ugly people. Short people are looked down upon (no pun intended). Liberals look down on conservatives, and vice versa. Were a species full of rage. But the bottom line is that you cannot control me without my permission. I can accomplish whatever I put my mind to, regardless what you think of me. The same is true for you. We must free our minds. Racism is found in every culture and society. Blacks are just as guilty of it as anyone. So what?

The “white flight” is true, but what do you want expect. People want to live with their own kind. Look at Little Italy and Chinatown, still all Italians and Chinese. I think this happens with all races.

Despite multiple programs in place to encourage just that, it rarely happens. Why? Well, do you want to go build up a school where you hear “he got shot in a driveby yesterday” while you’re taking roll?

DO you think black people are totally innocent in sticking with their own race? All races do things like that. The white flight is much less prevalent than in was years ago.

Well if they are not going to help, they can stop whining about the situation.

Blacks were given the opportunity to study with whites because “separate but equal was inherently unequal.” When blacks have that opportunity to receive the same education as whites, whites flee to the suburbs, removing their money from the inner city schools into their new suburban schools. Now, blacks, who largely had nothing, were supposed to fund the schools themselves and keep it at the same caliber as before?

…

You do realize that most Italians and most Chinese people do not in fact live in little Italies or Chinatowns?

Have you never seen someone who wasn’t white or something?

Sdma, there are still opportunities for these african americans to get out of their cities or make them better. How about the military? THey can join and make a life for themselves.

Also, its not impossible to go to these schools. THere are success stories. yes, it is harder, but you guys act like they are stuck. The people in the community could make it better, but they resort to crime.

Your an idiot, when did I say all chinese live in chinatown. Obviously its not true, but its not like all whites live in suburbs either. THe white flight is not every single white person.

matttt: although I’m sure I’m just charging at windmills trying to bring some examples: I’ll do so anyways. My hometown is Detroit. AFter the 68 riots, whites fled the city in droves. The last vestiges were effectively gone after busing. Coupled by decades of rancid city govt administration and successive economic downturns, the city began its spiral in the mid 70s. Property values plummet, tax base falls. middle class and upwardly mobile blacks join their previous neighbors out in the suburbs. Who is left? Lots of poor people.

Now you have last year’s record low test scores, record low HS graduation rates. Without commenting at all on the race of these students, in your utopia, greater society has no responsibility to alter the course of the school bus about to veer over the cliff? The school bus of successive generations of kids with terrible educations and only a future where they’ll have kids and be stuck in poverty like their uneducated parents?

No thank you Matt.

BTW: the military requires most people to have a GED or HS diploma. Last check Detroit was graduation 23% of ninth graders in four years.

But like I said, I’m just charging windmills trying to bring facts here.

Do you hear about the kid who graduated third in his class but can’t afford even community college? No. Do you hear about the kid who didn’t bother to apply to top schools because his teachers had no interest in writing letters of recommendation for him? No. You only know the stories of the people who got lucky.

T2, yeah it is harder for these people. Its not impossible like you make it out to be. The problem comes only when they resort to doing stupid **** like gangs and crime.

"Do you hear about the kid who graduated third in his class but can’t afford even community college? No. You only know the stories of the people who got lucky. "

Amarkov, I was just about to type something similar.

Matt, how do you know that it’s not hard for them? Do you live in a predominantly African American neighborhood? Do you live in an area high in poverty and crime?

“When they resort to stupid stuff” … easy for you to say.

I’ll tell you what: your original question:“Why should they have racial diversity in colleges” — if you actually were to know some innercity people, maybe your judgments wouldn’t be so extreme. You’re your own reason why there needs to be diversity in all aspects of our great society. Have a good night and good luck w/your college applications.

Let’s call it a night folks. This isn’t going to go much of anywhere.

If you really believe this, you are ridiculously ignorant.

I think you are all helping my argument that economic diversity scholarships are more important than racial diversity. yes, most people in these cities are black, but that is not the important part. My whole argument was that scholasrhisps should be for the financially needy, rather than just race in general. It seems like you guys agree for the most part.

sdma, when did I say its not hard for them. Do you now how to read?
