I'm a black male from the South looking at Wake Forest University. I was able to get a look at the campus because I was competing at the Debate Tournament there. Even so, I didn't really get a feel of the atmosphere. I'd define myself as fairly liberal, but I've lived in a conservative environment all my life so I see it as a non-issue. However, I saw an article about an incident involving the Kappa Alpha fraternity having Dress as a Black Person parties, or Rap Parties. Honestly, I saw the comments section more of an issue than the incident itself. Even so, I just wanted to know if WFU's student body is accepting of minorities, despite its homogeneous nature.

There is no racism. The “Dress as a Black Person Party (singular)” was a party ACTUALLY called “rap video.” KA managed to bring in Afroman and people were to dress as they’d go to a rap concert. The administration, and the wake forest student news, have blown the non-existent racism so far out of proportion they have prospective students thinking there was racism at the school. You couldn’t find actual racism here if you tried, unless you listen to everything the administration says.

I do not think there is anymore racism at Wake then any other school in the USA, for that matter. Wake is a very accepting and open environment, and Winston-Salem is a liberalized city with a nice art district. Wake is becoming increasingly more and more diverse each year, and as a matter of fact, this year’s applicants are the most diverse, most international, and most socio-economically diverse of any class in WFU history. Yes, the student body is very accepting of minorities.
There is no racism. Really?
I live in a very progressive town and there’s racism here. There’s racism everywhere.
BTW did you see this http://oldgoldandblack.com/?p=42238
Yes, @milkweed, however I think Winston-Salem is very liberal and does not experience racism as much as other conservative towns in the USA.
