So, most colleges accept a minority rather than a white/asian that has better stats and qualifications (generally speaking). I was just wondering why universities do this; I think that giving preference to those in financial need is acceptable, but I don’t understand why they would accept a Latino with ACT 29 rather than a white with a 35 (not an exaggeration according to HYPS SCEA threads).

Maybe the AOs looked at the rest of the application and realized the “lesser” applicant offered more.
The student is NOT just their GPA and test score. This applies to the high stat student as well as lower stat student. In the case of the high stat student, it may be “You can’t be just your GPA and test score”
Notice how race doesn’t enter into this? Colleges are not overflowing with URM’s (hence the U). Don’t go there for a scapegoat.
