Rice looks like a great uni - super smart students, fantastic weather, happiest students.

But Houston/Texas still has this racist stigma. For some reason, though, Rice scores very high on Princeton Review's 'cross-race interaction'...but maybe this is because local Texans aren't used to ANY cross-race interactions.

Anyway - and don't give me answers like 'you'll find racism anywhere' - is racism going to be a particular problem if I go to Rice?

No, not at all. Houston is a large and metropolitan city, with groups of people from many different races and cultures, and Rice is a very accepting place.

It is highly unlikely that anyone would experience racism of any nature on the campus of Rice, and racism directed against Chinese people anywhere in Houston is rare. My wife is Chinese and she never had any negative experiences of that nature in the many times we have been in Houston, and I have never heard of anyone else having such an experience. Houston has a significant Chinese population and a great many inhabitants who are first generation or second generation immigrants from other Asian nations, and around 40 percent of Houstonians are Hispanic (no race or ethnicity comprises a majority), so there is quite a bit of interaction between people of numerous ethnicities and races.

Houston does have a history of racism, particularly racism directed against African-Americans, though Houston has evolved in recent decades and attitudes and behavior have noticeably changed for the better.

come on… you must be kidding! There are tons of Chinese in Rice they are ORMs and why don’t you ask them yourself? Here is the Chinese Student Club at Rice. Write to them in Chinese/Shanghainese and get first hand information.

I’ve lived in Houston my entire life as someone from a racial minority, and I have never seen any instances of racial discrimination against Chinese people in general. You’ll be fine.

As a Hispanic alum of Rice, I never experienced a sort of racism. The collaboration and interaction at Rice and Houston is amazing. The diversity is beyond the charts (20% of the 2012 incoming class was Hispanic, not many top schools can say that). Rice ranks #17 on the USNEWS’ s Diversity Index.
