Racism in southern states?

Re: #56 and racial deed restrictions

Some deed restrictions may have allowed only white people to live there, excluding all others, rather than naming groups to be excluded.

No one ethnic group or area has a monopoly on racism and prejudice. For example. OP is a Korean national. The prejudice biracial Koreans (particularly those with African heritage) have experienced in Korea is well documented.

Never heard that Missouri was unfriendly towards international students. WashU has a lot of internationals. Although St. Louis is considered more liberal than the rest of the state.

As someone originally from an area where one might see Confederate flags flying in yards and on decals of pickup trucks, I’d say yes, that’s a pretty good shorthand.

African Americans equate it with slavery in the same way Jews equate a swastika with the Holocaust. For some reason, some believe it is more benign and more of a symbol of southern pride. For most, the southern pride thing doesn’t sell and view it on a spectrum between extremely insensitive and totally racist.

I would disagree that Confederate flag=racism. That might be an accurate assessment of some of the rednecks that go around flying one on their pickup truck, but I know many people who view it as a symbol of Southern heritage who are not at all racist. For instance, you don’t see many of them in my area but if you asked people whether they should be removed from all public places, flags, etc., the overwhelming response would be no. I do know some unsavory characters, but most of the people are good, decent people who treat everyone fairly. We have a small percentage of black or biracial students, but they are just as involved and treated the same as everyone else, at least around here.

I live in an area where one can see confederate flags and while I do not think everyone who likes that flag is racist, I do think many of the ones I have met, perhaps even most, are racist.

How are we defining “racist”?

^How about someone who believes public or private institutions should treat people differently because of their race.
