racism?

Recently a journalism major from san jose state came and talked to my class about his school. I know it is very close to Santa Clara's campus so i asked him how he felt about Santa Clara. He said there is a lot of problems recently on campus about some sort of "border parties" students are having where they dress up like poor hispanic people and other degrading things of that nature, and that in certain situations blacks aren't aloud into santa clara parties. Is there any truth to this or is he just biased because he goes to san jose?

DD is a student at SCU. The party you heard about was off campus (one party)...and yes, the students exercised poor judgment..but the school responded very well to the issue. My daughter says there is NOT racism at the school...not at all. She has never heard of any situation where any student was excluded from a school event because of race. Private people having private parties, of course, can invite whomever they please. But any party or event at Santa Clara is open to ALL the students on the campus. BTW...the press coverage of this party incident was in response to SCU's president speaking about the incident and how the university was handling it. It's too bad when one event becomes the only thing folks can see in a school. DD says that this off campus party involved a very small number of students with poor judgment and in no way reflects the way the campus as a whole is.

thank you very much

I agree with thumper1 that the students involved exercised poor judgement, but I think the context of this situation is also relevant. The host of the party was Mexican-American and he set the party theme (it was his birthday). The students dressed the way they did to roast him.

The unversity tries to do a good job of creating a sense of community free of class and race issues. But, with all things in life you may encounter some individuals who are racist or have preconceived stereotypes. I definitely ran into this when I was a student at SCU, but it only happened once or twice in my four years at the school.
