I just received my SAT scores and I got a 1470 (730 CR 740 M). I know that this is a high score that could get me into some great colleges, but I want to increase my score to be a competitive applicant for selective schools. The most selective schools that I’m planning on applying to are Washington University and Northwestern. I’m already signed up to take the SAT again in about a month. Private tutoring isn’t really an option for me, so what would be the most effective way to self study and improve my score? Those schools super score, but if I improve my score would the lower scores that I already sent affect my application?
There is already a lot of great information here on how to improve scores. Search the “Xiggi method.” Also, my new favorite math review book is PWN the SAT Math. My favorite for grammar and reading are by Erica Meltzer. Both are fantastic for improving already excellent scores. Good luck!
Have you tried Khan Academy, free online through College Board? Don’t underestimate practice tests. Also, did you pay to get the list of questions you missed so you can study with purpose? Studying trouble areas, particularly in math, can reap big rewards.
Are you having trouble with certain concepts or finishing sections on time? One is in depth studying. The other is researching test taking tactics and taking practice tests with a hard clock - no fudging.
@SoccerMomGenie Thanks for sharing those resources!
@Sportsman88 I have taken a couple practice tests on Khan academy. I think what I need to focus on now is just taking the test rather than studying certain concepts. Unfortunately the question and answer service won’t be mailed for 8-10 weeks, but I will try to target my trouble areas on practice tests.
Since you scored 730/740 already I assume you do not need to study content and also I doubt if you will identify a specific area of weakness. If you do find an area of clear weakness that would be extremely helpful but in my experience the mistakes at that level tend to be more spread among a few categories. I would suggest just practice through the tests and see what might help you. For example you might need to write down a bit more and not do all the math mentally to avoid some careless mistakes or circle a few key words etc. Some times just the experience of the test might be enough to give you a higher score.
