So I didn't know where to ask this question...
I won the American Legion Award when I was in 8th grade.
I'm now a sophomore...
My question is will this award help me in my college apps?

Do you guys know if this is a prestigious award?

Thank you=)

Depends, did it involve something meaningful to you? I’m assuming no, since you are inquiring if it’ll help you look good on a college app.

It is definitely meaningful to me because I know why I got it in the first place.
But since I have never heard of it I am curious

Very unlikely to help you unless it was so meaningful to you that you want to write about it in your essay… Your collage application will ask about awards and honors you received in 9th-12th grades…

If you want to elaborate perhaps someone can help you with more specific information…

Would it help OP’s admission chances at places which are not need blind?

No - Why would an American Legion Award in the 8th grade have anything to do with admission chances at places which are need blind, or not?

Perhaps I misunderstood what American Legion award is about. In general, does it help if you have substantial scholarships from outside sources?

^^^ TippuSultan - I think OP was talking about receiving an award (honor) for something he was involved in, not being “awarded a scholarship”.

To answer your different question -

In general, does it help if you have substantial scholarships from outside sources? - often it does. Because it shows the school that some other organization found you very worthy and “in general” organizations (and schools) like to give preference to students who have already won something because it pre-validates their belief that you are special and worthy.

As for does it help more at schools that are not need blind? - I’m not sure, because it shows you can pay, but do they really care how you can pay or just that you can pay? Perhaps someone more on the inside of admissions can help with that…
