^^ Thanks, I didn’t know there was such a thread, i just took up from the previous post. I just refresh and it’s gone!!! too funny.
Helpful CC’ers…my co-worker’s brother died relatively suddenly a couple of months ago. He has a 401K with a named beneficiary, but nobody in the family knows who the beneficiary actually is. It’s not his wife, ex-wife, daughters, parents, sibling…the investment firm will not tell anyone who the beneficiary actually IS (including the attorney handling probate) or give any info at all, except to say that documents have been mailed. It was the wife that filed the death certificate, etc. with the investment company.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how the family could find out? It doesn’t make sense to anyone that it’s not someone that they know. (It’s a close family, there aren’t really a lot of skeletons that are hidden)
@JustaMom5465 Do they know when the 401k was established? He may have never changed the beneficiary…who was he close to when it was established?
How to find a rental home?
We are moving to NC in the next few months from out-of-state. We aren’t tied to a specific area, thinking near Raleigh/Durham, Greensboro or Winston-Salem areas.
How do we find a home to rent? We would like to rent for a year so we can figure out where we want to purchase. Don’t want an apartment. I know when we moved to NJ/NY we had to use a realtor. I see rentals on Zillow, we used Craigs List years ago when we had a gap between selling and purchasing a home…
Craigslist is a cesspool of fraud and deceit. I would be extremely cautious if you look on there. DW, who is a RE agent, no longer uses it, and has her listings stolen and illicitly posted on Craigslist regularly.
Zillow is not a bad option as it scrapes the local multiple listing service. The Zillow listing should have the name of the listing agent.
Otherwise find a local agent with relocation certs, they may be better plugged into what’s available. Or there will often be one agent in an office who specializes in rentals, try to find that person.
Update on my winter coat question: we ordered a knee length parka from Marmot and D got it last week and loves it (wore it on one of her site visits). It was a style that she saw at an online store recommended here. Thrifty mom was (luckily) able to find it elsewhere for $40 less in the color that D picked. Feeling good about it.
We found an article on Outdoor gear lab that compared winter jackets for women and listed the pros and cons of each one. She found that very useful when deciding between her top choices.
Thanks to all who chimed in with tips and advice.
Regarding the 401(k) beneficiary –
There is a law that the $$$ in the 401(k) must go to the spouse, unless the spouse signed a paper and had it notarized that someone else could be the beneficiary. So it’s either the wife, or the wife knows about it.
Maybe it’s his other wife.
That would be the third wife. Ex-ex-wife? But it ought to be the wife at the time of death.
What if there is more than one wife at the time of death, which is how I interpret @notrichenough’s comment. It has happened before.
One of my neighbors found our her DH had a entire second family (wife and kids) on another continent!
The current wife is not the beneficiary, and the ex-wife (mother of the 2 daughters, aged 19 and 21) has said that she’s not the beneficiary either. Sounds like the deceased’s father might open a fraud case. And let all the known parties that he will do so, in case someone isn’t being forthcoming…
Don’t think there’s an ex ex wife, but you never know…
Maybe he rolled it into an IRA and named a trust as that beneficiary? Or is it certain there’s an extant 401K?
Change of topic.
What do you eat for breakfast?
I eat a huge bowl of plain yogurt, with jam mixed in for sweetness. I get around 18 to 20 grams of protein with that, which really sets me up for the day. I find that when I eat something else – oatmeal, or peanut butter – I don’t get as much protein in the morning and I am peckish the rest of the day. The only other thing I’m aware of that could give me as much protein is eggs. But I’m getting bored with my yogurt, and I don’t want to eat eggs a lot. What, besides eggs, would give me a huge portion of protein?
Just had oatmeal. Been eating it since a kid. Not every morning but so good today.
6 slices of bacon.
Currently eating a typical breakfast at my desk. A poached egg and whole milk plain yogurt with some fresh fruit , a tsp. of maple syrup and my homemade granola.
I like savory breakfast a lot of the time. Yesterday I had this (don’t call me weird):
Columbus Peppered Dry Salame, an ounce or two of manchengo cheese, blackberries and a homemade latte.
I also like to do “bowls”. Hot muesli that I then layer on top some combo of: dried cherries or dates, fresh banana or berries, sliced almonds or pecans, and crunchy peanut butter. Sometimes I’ll add a few dark chocolate chips.
Apples and PB or Apples and Cheese.
But I love eggs. Just one a day, but several times a week.
Home-made smoothies here, with the same protein goals, @VeryHappy. Plain greek yogurt with a bunch of frozen fruit thrown in and blended. They’re really good!
Old, old weight watchers: toast (may be just a little butter, maybe none.) Then a cpl tablespoons of cottage cheese. Love it Might sprinkle a little Worcester or HP sauce. But I don’t eat the same breakfast every day.
I eat 2 containers Skyr yogurt (30 grams protein) with a scoop of Bran Buds.
Same thing every day.
