random questions

I have three kind of random questions...

Is it possible to rent bikes to use during the school year because it would really be a hassle for me to bring my own bike?

Is there a Washington Mutual nearby or on campus?

Should I bring a printer?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

having your own printer will be convenient (for last minute projects etc) but you can print at the library. You can also arrange with your roommate(s) to see if one of you will be bringing the printer.

there is a bank at the university village across from campus but I can't remember which one it is.

I believe that at the beginning of the school year the Public Safety Department has a sale of the used bikes that were left on campus. They sell out quickly but that might be a way for you to get a bike inexpensively. I've never heard of long-term rental bikes.

Bring a printer! You will be regret it when your class is starting in 10 minutes and you don't have your paper in your hands because you just finished it 2 minutes ago and you don't have a printer. Get a cheap one or something it'll definitely be worth it.

Don't trust the DPS bike sale they only had like 60-100 to start out with and there were so many people there... (and the bikes kinda suck.. I stood in line for about 30 minutes and I wasn't even close to getting one. So i said screw this and went to target) Just goto target or the UV bike shop or something and get one. You can't rent one but might as buy one.. its a bike afterall, they aren't that expensive (if you goto target you can get a new one for 70 dollars)

I dont think I saw a washington mutual around here but that might be just because its not my bank. the bank bmom's talking about is bank of america. There's also a wells fargo ATM in the UV. I think the simplest one to have is BoA because they have the most ATMs around here...

niubie - If you're a girl, you won't want to buy a bike until you see what's in style :) I was charmed by all the sherbet colored bikes with fat tires that I saw on campus!

Do a lot of students have bikes at USC? Is a bike a must have? I recall the campus easily accessible by walking.

How true, I believe that it was only after we visited USC last year that my D got seriously wound up about an Electra Cruiser :-)

There is no WAMU on campus. The closest ATM is on Figueroa (on the other side of Exposition) at the Tuscany Apartments. S has a WAMU account but opened a USC Credit Union account (free checking for students) because it was more convenient with lots of ATMs around campus. I think they will send all freshman an application (advertisement) to sign up for a USC Credit Union account before orientation. They make it easy to transfer money into the account by faxing a form whenever you want to do that.

The most important thing about your bike is that you get a good lock and make sure you always lock your bike to something, not just to itself. It WILL get stolen if it is not locked to something.

When I was on campus, I was amazed at how many bikes were unlocked or locked in such a way that they would be very easy to steal, yet there they sat waiting for their owners to pick them up. Our whole family noticed as it reminded us of our other son who had his bike stolen at another campus last year despite the TWO locks that were on it. It looks like cruiser bikes are the style at USC and plenty of kids have them. My husband asked one girl why they all seemed to have the same exact bikes and she told us there was a bike shop near campus that sold them very cheaply.

If you are a freshman it isn't really necessary to have a bike since the campus is so small. For upperclassmen who live off campus, they are more of a necessity.

As for security, Bike theft is huge on campus and yet people still forget to lock their bikes. Go figure.
