rank the BIG TEN in engineering

Oh, we're gonna win it this year. Watch and see. :)

Perhaps you've heard of a team based out of Southern California? Or one out of Ohio? Or one out of Michigan?

BTW, I'm not even sure Florida can get past Bama.

I know my college football, no need to ask me questions like that. ;)

Listen, we have a great chance this year. Chris Leak is on fire, our defense is one of the best in the nation, we can work on our running game, but we have an excellent team.

Please, Bama is good, but they are not going to repeat last year.

"Indiana #97? I don't believe IU has an engineering program."

While I've never bought into USNews' highly unscientific popularity contest masquerading as rankings, I find it unbelievable they'd actually rank Indiana in an engineering category when anyone with a clue about major universities knows IU has never had an engineering program -- at least in the modern era -- for well over a century flagship public engineering in Indiana has been completely centered at the state's land grant university: Purdue... Tell me you're mistaking and USNews didn't completely blow any shred of it's academic credibility by ranking a program that doesn’t even exist ...

BTW, who ever listed Michigan and Northwestern as the top 2 engineering schools is strictly 'rating' such schools based on popularity and admissions -- While UM is up there, Northwestern, by most credible estimates, ranks below Purdue, UIUC and perhaps Wisconsin and maybe even MSU in engineering. NU's top strengths are business, music, Journalism, speech, theater, law and the like, not engineering.

Oh and FYI, just so you know.

PAC 10 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> BIG TEN

Some posters in this thread really show how UNHELPFUL this website can be! People who are putting Northwestern above Illinois engineering... do some research.

Illinois

Michigan

Wisconsin/Purdue

PSU

i agree that illinois is # 1 for engineering but not for undergrad (overall).

"Quote:
1. Michigan & Northwestern

Wisconsin
Illinois
Penn State

Indiana
Iowa
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue
Michigan State

Dude. Please tell me that was a joke"

that was the ranking for undergrad(overall) from US news and weekly NOT for engineering.

the below rankings someone typed makes sense for me: (for engineering)
1. Illinois
2. Michigan
3. Wisconsin/Purdue
4. PSU

Michigan undergrad and grad rankings by department

http://www.admissions.umich.edu/fastfacts.html

I feel like Im getting the same education when I went to Towson U(undergrad) to Virginia Tech(undergrad) then too Columbia U(graduate). All teachers basically teach the same way. I felt like my professors from Towson were no worst in teaching than Columbia. BUT the difference comes in competitiveness. Plus the reputation can only help you in finding a job. Also, bigger engineering schools tend to have more research programs running. At Virginia Tech there were so many different focus areas compared to Columbia. Columbia lacks space, so most of their research are on the smaller scale.

I agree exactly with VTjas above. I've gone to a 2nd tier engg school for undergrad, Purdue for grad school (EE); now working at Intel.

Based on my experience, if you restrict yourself to engineering, the general echelons can be described as follows:

1) Michigan, UIUC (Believe me, for most eng'g majors, whether you go into industry or academia, no one will differentiate between these 2, no matter what the rankings actually say).

2) Purdue, Wisconsin

3) PSU, Minnesota, Northwestern(which is somewhat boosted by its excellent non-eng'g rep)

4) everyone else

You certainly shouldnt put complete faith in the rankings, but do remember that employers/Grad school will certainly at least take it into consideration. While there might not be much of a distinction for eng'g schools in the top 15-20 or so, these people will certainly recognize a difference between these schools and the top 50-60 school.

While I tend to agree that the teaching quality isn't much different between most schools, the quality of the recruitment scene is very much in line with rankings. It's not completely fair, but top companies tend to gravitate towards top schools.

It's no suprise that at work, I see armies of engineers hailing from schools like Michigan and Illinois, and very few if any from big10 schools from the (4) category above.

hey,

PSU isn't good in eng. because of non-eng. reputation.....

that school is in top 20 for grad and undergrad in ranks. (in eng.)

can anyone post the complete undergrad rankings for general engineering please?

Just keep in mind that your:

1) Interviewing skills
2) School's accessibility to corporations recruiting
3) Knowledge of practical skills that bring added value to a company

...all figures in to your place in the job market.

Plenty of engineers from the Michigans, Illinois and Purdues are reporting to and/or are being led by engineers from the East Carolinas, Tulanes and the Nevadas of the world.

I have seen it.

Michigan far "out-ranks" Michigan State in engineering programs...but Michigan does not have as large a "placement services" machine as Michigan State.

1) Interviewing skills
2) School's accessibility to corporations recruiting
3) Knowledge of practical skills that bring added value to a company

2 is based on the school, i'm pretty sure that was taken into account for rankings.

1 and #3 are only based on you, so if your good @ what you do then you succed there, i guess.

Tom725,

I posted that because (looking at your profile) I used to work in the Philly area. My employer at the time was doing to I.T. consulting for Cigna Insurance and Syracuse had the summer internships locked up there. Cigna must have had some success with the Syracuse interns/grads and they were there in drones.

wow tom725 thanks for that list... is their a ranked Chemical Engineering list?? if their is and you post it, i'll love you ;)

i'm also looking for Chem E because i'm majoring in it.
(well i'm just a fresh, i have to go through the entrance of major process after the 4th semester.)
