what’s wrong with ranking the lesser ivies?

I think CCers are mostly a bunch of arrogant prestige W’s who try too hard to pretend not to be.

Seriously, what’s wrong with ranking the lesser ivies?

Because there is no such thing as a lesser Ivy.

I shouldn’t have posted what I just did. I’m clearly very uninformed, so let me read this book I just got, ranking the Ivy’s. It has a chapter on the lesser Ivy’s, how do they rank and how do the greater Ivy’s try to help them. After I finish my book I’ll post something on this thread.

Exactly the response I was expecting. :)

In reality though, HYP IS more well known than the rest. Face it, they are at different levels. Just because the rest of the ivies are also very great schools doesn’t mean that they are all at the same level.

What’s wrong with thinking that some schools are better than others? There are rankings everywhere, you don’t have to follow them… But there’s nothing wrong with rankings.

I hear you username, you make a good point. What bothers me about the question is that the Ivys that are not HYP are all very different schools from one another. HYP have a lot in common, I don’t think the other Ivys do. Apples and oranges.

What’s wrong is that it slices the baloney so thin as to be meaningless. Asking to rank the “lesser Ivies” is like asking which are the slowest four guys running in the finals of the Olympic 100 meter dash. They may well be slightly slower than the three guys who won the medals, but they are waay faster than the vast majority of average people.

There are approximately 4000 colleges and universities in the US, and all of the Ivy League schools are ranked in the top 16 by USNews. They are so close to each other and far ahead of the of the truly mediocre schools as to make the obsession with ranking, re-ranking, and re-re-ranking them laughable.

That’s true.

That’s also true.

However, when people are making their college lists, they are effectively “ranking” colleges, and deciding to apply to the top x on their lists. In the end, as these are all very good schools, pretty much the only factor in ranking these schools is a personal preference, and by briefly “ranking” them in terms of factors that may affect personal preferences, people can sort of pick which one is better for them.

My opinion, anyway.

I see what you mean. Ranking has a connotation of better or worse. There has to be a way to phrase this so as to emphasize that it’s not so much about better or worse as different.

Penn>Columbia>Dartmouth>Brown>Cornell

So true. Just now on the similar threads I see: “How would you rank the Ivies”, “Let’s Rank the Ivies”, “Ivies Rank”, “How to get a date!”-hint I made one of these up ;)

Let’s just all cave into our CC-animalistic desires and start ranking left, right and center!

Penn~Brown~Columbia~Cornell~Dartmouth>>>>>>>>>>this stupid rankings thread.

I win.

“Thanks coureur, this is the dumbest one I recall.”

hmom5:

Someone’s too “dumb” to realize that this is a joke thread designed to attract certain prestige whores.

The OP is LOL @ you!!!

The OP just seems so muti-faceted…

(or is it multifaced?) ;)

Because clearly bars are the only things a city as large and diverse as New York has to offer…

A person really has to define their intended concentration before this question can possibly be addressed.

Engineering?
Biological Sciences?
Math & Physical Sciences?
Liberal Arts?
Social Sciences?
Fine Arts?
Pre-Law?
Pre-Business?
Pre-Medicine?

In each of those areas, you could find a different non-HYP Ivy (my preferred term for these five) as the highest ranked.

By this method, I would find Cornell #1 in at least two categories.

Re: “HYP have a lot in common”:

good grief, what exactly do HYP have in common? They are so different that students who choose one might NEVER choose the other two. Sometimes I think the attribute of a school that dominates everyone’s attention here is it’s placement in public rankings.

Good grief, what exactly do Google, Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Co. have in common? They are so different that graduating students who choose one might NEVER choose the other two. I think the attribute of a company that dominates everyone’s attention here is its placement in recruiting rankings.

What do they have in common? They are the best of the best. Simple.
