Rank the universities of the WORLD

When students from poor families and disadvantaged students don't even send in an application to Oxbridge, how are they to take them in in the first place?

If everyone is allowed to apply to BOTH oxford and cambridge, everyone else would. From applicants in the UK, to EU, to overseas. Try restricting applicants to apply to only one of HYPSM and let's see if applicant per place would drop or rise.

The 50% of straight A applicants probably recognise that there are other good universities in UK who suit their needs more. (closer to home, cheaper city to live in etc)

Oxbridge probably learnt how to use their wealth from wealthy American universities.

Again, seeing the dollar opportunity is not unlike American universities.

This I agree. Oxbridge does has its demerits.

Oxbirdge bribery would be on national news here in the UK - the press love that kind of stuff.

Care to point out any links to the news stories in question....if they actually exist.

http://www.oxfordstudent.com/tt2002wk0/news/pembroke_-_up_for_sale

I don't wish to drag up an old scandal, or to judge Oxbridge by the actions of two admissions tutors. What's more, no one doubts that donating a science library to any university in America is an automatic admission for Jr, regardless of stats.

This is just to prove that the stories exist.

As reported in the article, no one could forgive the 2 tutors in question. I doubt any respectable university will close an eye to bribery, so it is unlikely that any respectable university will keep taking bribes in exchange for a place.

This was an isolated incident that occurred 3 years ago. What's more, the reporter in question had already tried to bribe 3 other colleges, and failed.

Also, the student in question would still have had to meet his A level offer (at least AAB).

1) University of Toronto

and that's the honest truth.

it's quite incredible! in your opinio the best universities of the world are all located in anglosaxon world!!!
and the other universities?
for example the university of paris la sorbonne, the university of Bologna the oldest in the world or the humboldt university in Berlin

stanford is definently becoming the best university in the world

I say Harvard wins that contest 99 times out of 100. The 1 being Stanford.

1) MIT and IIT
2) Stanford
3) Harvard and Yale
4) Berkeley
4) Oxford and Princeton
5) Cambridge

No way University of Chicago is definetly on the top five. Besides it completely beats out Berkely (sensing some bias here? :) )

1) Oxford Cambridge
2) Harvard Yale
3) U.C. Chicago
4) MIT
5) Berkely

this is my list
for political sciences : Science Po Paris
for enginering : Politecnico di Torino (Turin)
for architecture : Universit

University of Toronto...uh no, I think some random asian schools could beat that out..IIT

IIT is not a random asian school. Quite simply the competition for the IITs puts HYPS in the shade. Quality of education is second to none.

no way IIT and MIT r near close to each other

IIT and ITT tech r more similar

lol, do you even know IIT? Its more competitive to get into than MIT and produces many brilliant engineers (Its in India). It may not have the endowment of HYPSM, but the quality of its student body is right up there with the top universities of the world.

haha JK....i kno boutz it frm 9th grade world geography

where is HEC (hautes etudes de commerce) on this list. if you are talking about business schools and grad schools then this one is on the top.

i wrote that list just to underline that there are top universities in europe too and not just in america, aniway the most part of french "grands ecoles" are excellent

"i wrote that list just to underline that there are top universities in europe too and not just in america, aniway the most part of french "grands ecoles" are excellent"

thank you for pointing that out. unforunately, the vast majority of the posters here on collegeconfidential are american-centric. that's why harvard will almost always be above oxford in these opinion rankings, but if you ask other parts of the world, it might be the other way around.
