<p>Back in the Pleistocene when I went to high school, the #1 student in the graduating class was the "Valedictorian." Has this become an unusual award? Maybe it's not PC to suggest that anyone is more academically successful than anyone else (it's only OK to be better at sports -- don't get me started).</p>

But im not sure if colleges can really use that as a credential, because many of the secondary schools across the nation do not rank their students.</p>

<p>wat im saying is, the transcript speaks for itself. your gpa is included in there as well. so wats the point of mentioning ur excellent grades again in the awards column?</p>

<p>You can't put val because technically, as of applications, you don't know whether you will be val or sal. Don't worry about them not noticing it; it will definitely be taken into account.</p>

<p>If you were specifically given an "award" or "title" for being...most honorable science student or something, you can put it down. If you just think you are or it has to do with grades or something, don't bother.</p>

<p>yes, our school does that too.
you get awards for being 1st in each class as well as for being 1st overall</p>

<p>on my app. i'm using one slot to list all of the 1st-in-subject awards
and another slot to list the rank 1st overall for freshman thru junior year
they give us medals, and certificates for 2nd/3rd</p>
