My daughter’s school does not share the student’s rank within the high school or the smaller IB program. (For Val/Sal purposes, the two are separate.) They do, however, share the student’s rank within the county and the GC said to use that instead: x of 5015 students.
Curious if anyone has heard of other schools doing this. Will it seem odd to share this ranking or should she say the school doesn’t rank, even though her county ranking is excellent. I’m wondering if it would raise a flag or if this is at least somewhat normal. Thoughts?
Never heard of this and don’t think it would be feasible in most areas. Different schools weight differently and have different levels of grade inflation/deflation. For example, at my niece’s HS, fully 10% of the class has a WGPA above 100%. At my kids’ HS (a few towns away), only one or two kids a year graduates with a WGPA over 100%.
All of the schools in the county use the same 4.0 grading scale and weight Honors and IB/AP the same. (4.5 for an A in Honors; 5 for an A in IB and AP courses). Of course, some schools offer more AP/IB courses than others, so the weighting does favor some schools.
They provided the county rankings in 10th and 11th grade as well, and they seem quite standardized. But I agree it’ seems unusual.
I’ve never heard of a regional ranking either.
Many, many schools do not rank and just will give colleges deciles - so top 5%, 10%, etc…If your school doesn’t do that and your D has a high regional rank, I don’t see any harm in reporting, especially if the GC will do the same.
