ranking the 30 most prestigious places to study worldwide.

hi. i’m new to these forums. i’m from indiana university (bloomington) and doing a research on top schools of the world (basically collecting info and ranking them) for a project. till now- this is my list and ranking. (these include LACs and full time colleges). also- these rankings are solely based on name recognition, employer reviews, faculty fame, overall prestige and on a slightly peculiar factor- the colleges people turn down to go to X college. so, if X college ranks high- and someone who did my survey rejected X for Y, it gives Y points in the rankings. so i’m arranging them according to prestige.

my list so far (top 30) is:

Harvard University (USA)

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA)

Princeton University (USA)

University of Oxford (UK)

Stanford University (USA)

University of California, Berkeley (USA)

University of Cambridge (UK)

Yale University (USA)

University of California, Los Angeles (USA)

ETH Zurich (Switzerland)

Indian Institute of Technology (India)

University of Pennsylvania (USA)

London School of Economics (UK)

Amherst College (LAC) (USA)

Williams College (LAC) (USA)

University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong)

Duke University (USA)

Carnegie Mellon University (USA)

Columbia University (USA)

National University of Singapore (Singapore)

University of Chicago (USA)

Ecole Normale Sup

I’d probably add the Sorbonne, put Oxbridge a little higher on the list, and maybe write Wharton instead of Penn because that’s what people know here. Oh and maybe add the University of Toronto.

People of course know UPenn!! Yale should be much higher on that list. Should replace MIT.

@Ruby: I agree, people do know uPenn- but i know people who confuse it with Penn State! Hahah! But if you mention Wharton (at least in India and Singapore), people go WOW! Also, at least in India, MIT Presige>>>>>Yale Prestige. So, I guess helpwithresearch is right at that.

@QuasiProfound: Sorbonne? What’s that about? LOL! Never heard of it before? (maybe I’m just to much of a n00b!)

@helpwithresearch: Put Oxbridge higher, put the IITs higher, NUS, hmm… though it is pretty famous around SE Asia, i would wonder how much WOW factor it has in the western world. But then again, considering it has exchange programmes with Stanford n all, i think they probably regard it highly. And whatever happened to Northwestern and Vandy? Frankly, I’ve heard of them more often than say… McGill! Yup… so you might want to consider that. otherwise, cool list.

Yeah it’s different in every country. However, Yale has far more prestige and recognition internationally. Prestige wise I think it goes Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford and Cambridge. That’s just prestige though.

Sorbonne is in France and definitely a good univ. You need to add Karolinska Institutet on your list.

I definitely disagree with your list. It’s too US-centric.

^ Rather, it seems to be too English-speaking world centric.

Yup. Definitely English-speaking centric, and in that too, too US-centric. Clearly illustrated by the omission of the Sorbonne.

Ruby, in MY (let me emphasize the my) part of India, it’s mostly twelfth-graders applying to college who have heard about (and desperately hope to get into  ) Penn. Whereas EVERYONE knows Wharton.

I think that additionally Australian National University (ANU) should be awarded a rank in this list. IIT in India doesn’t stand a chance for this ranking. I think this ranking is biased towards US universities. It should be amended.

Why is UCL your number 30? Ridiculous! Its better and way more prestigious than most on your list.

I wont confine myself to 30. Rankings are subjective, so ill just name some universities i know to be good.

In no particular order:

University of Copenhagen (Denmark)
Uppsala University (Sweden)
Lund University (Sweden)
University of Oslo (Norway)
University of Helsinki (Finland)
University College, London (UK)
London School of Economics and Political Science (UK)
University of Oxford (UK)
University of Cambridge (UK)
Edinburgh University (UK)
ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
University of St. Gallen (Switzerland)
Utrecht University (Netherlands)
University of Vienna (Austria)
Trinity College Dublin (Ireland)
Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany)
University of Freiburg (Germany)
University of Heidelberg (Germany)
Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic)
Jagiellonian University (Poland)
Moscow State University (Russia)
Harvard University (USA)
University of California, Berkeley (USA)
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA)
McGill University (Canada)
University of Toronto (Canada)
Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong)
Fudan University (China)
Peking University (China)
National University of Singapore (Singapore)
University of Tokyo (Japan)
Osaka University (Japan)
Australian National University (Australia)
University of Sydney (Australia)

ok the list is getting pretty long so ill stop now…

What criteria are we ranking by: Prestige? Teaching quality? Research activity?

As the title states, prestige :eyeroll:

its ridiculous to rank universities by prestige, its better to do as i did and list a few prestigious universities in different countries.

I think universities shouldn’t be judged through rankings…what do you think everyone???

I think we’re just posting on this thread to humour the OP because we’re bored :3

Is it even possible to rank universities by world-wide prestige? I mean in my country it is mainly Harvard and Columbia that get recognition, in India, as it was mentioned earlier, you have MIT and Wharton, etc. I think you can do it on a country-by-country basis, but to do a worldwide prestige research you need to do a heck of a research involving people from all over the world.

lol. How do you define prestige exactly?

Yeah, prestige varies depending on where you live… the IITs are huge in India but not that much outside for instance

Yeah, the IITs have an acceptance rate of about 2% when you’ve got around 300,000 genius Indians applying! Scary!

Just to point out an error, you put USA in parenthesis next to Imperial College, London.
