Ranking the SEC Schools' Academics

52% of UGA students were in the top 10% of their HS class, while UF can boast a much higher 85%. Still, UGA is a gem of a school, and I hope both UF and UGA continue their upward trend.

I was seriously asking and not being snide. Which programs are the "top" grad programs there?

Rankings really don't reveal much. However...

U of South Carolina and U of Mississippi have much quality in their undergraduate program and should be acknowledged as such. In fact, the liberal arts departments at Ole Miss may be as strong as those offered at the flagship midwestern universities such as Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa.

South Carolina probably has the best undergraduate business program of any public university in the Southeast.

I did some checking on the USNWR publicly accessible page for comparisons of UGA and UF graduate rankings. Please keep in mind that UGA does not have engineering (except ag engineering) due to those programs being at GT and no medical school due to those programs being at MCG. Also, I only looked at what was publicly available; so, there very well could be rankings viewable on the subscription page that I could not access.

Business: UF 41 to UGA 46

Law: UGA 34 to UF 41

Education: UGA 25 to UF 35
subfields: counseling UF 2, elementery UGA 3

Public Affairs: UGA 3
subfields: public finance UGA 3, public management UGA 2 (my masters specialty)

I don't claim this list to be exhaustive. It was based on my simply looking at the publicly available lists.

Yes but UGA's Peer Assesment score is still noticeably lower than UF's. You can not play the: Oh well we don't have Engineering or Medical Schools card if you are truly going to compare both universities graduate & professional programs as a whole. For example UF does not even offer a Public Affairs program.

UF's overall grad & professional programs >> UGA's overall grad & professional programs

Why are you being so snide and antagonistic? I'm merely offering items for discussion, and you seem to be taking this personally. You might also want to check out UF's course offerings. If you do you will find that UF does in fact offer public affairs though the polisci department:

http://web.polisci.ufl.edu/graduate/index.shtml

I have not said anything negative about UF. I believe it to be a fine institution. You seem to have something against UGA and want to tear it down.

UGA does not offer engineering. That has always been GT's domain. UGA doesn't currently offer a medical school, but there are plans under way to open a med school in Athens. The state's current medical school is in Augusta as part of the Medical College of Georgia. It is not yet known whether or not it will be a unit of UGA or a unit of MCG or a partnership between the two institutions. UGA has put its political might behind the project; so, I'm sure that it will have some sort of official connections with it.

I specifically termed my post above about the grad rankings to offer room for discussion and not as an absolute. As for peer ranking scores, according to the 2006 USNWR rankings, UF has a 3.5 and UGA has a 3.4; so, there isn't a whole lot of difference there. In 2007 it's 3.6 for UF and 3.4 for UGA; so, once again not a huge difference.

If you have access to the data, go back and look to see where UGA was 12 years ago prior to HOPE and where it is now, and I think you'll find that UGA has been on a very rapid rise, and it will continue to do so based on its momentum.

"Why are you being so snide and antagonistic?"
I have been doing political lobbying for a while, and tend to be a hardliner. I hope you don't take it personally. I truly believe that UGA is one of the best universities in the South.

"If you have access to the data, go back and look to see where UGA was 12 years ago prior to HOPE and where it is now, and I think you'll find that UGA has been on a very rapid rise, and it will continue to do so based on its momentum."

The same goes for UF which was ranked the 27th overall best public in the early 90's, whereas today we are tied for 13th. Florida is also on the rise largely on account of Florida Bright Futures (which is somewhat similar to the HOPE grant). I guess it is kinda pointless to compare our internal & external factors to project where our universities will ultimately end up.

Understood. In my opinion UGA is sorely lacking in the undergrad areas. The entering classes continue to offer higher academic creds, but UGA is just so research and theory oriented that it doesn't do the job that it should in the undergrad areas. The grad programs, with the exception of Terry and Grady (business and journalism) and the education college, are the main focus of the institution.

For UGA to really move to the top of the rankings it is going to have to put more focus on the underegrad programs, but based on current trends it looks like more and more biomed research is the order of the day.

The institution will continue to rise in stature, but it is being hampered somewhat in the PR department. The current president is a PR nightmare, but he appears to be winning some of the battles in favor of academics over athletics.

The Gators over the Dawgs in Jax on the 28th. Mark it down!

Wow, that's really a stretch prediction.

UGA is going at best 7-5 this season, and it very easily could be worse.

However, I don't get wrapped up in UGA football as being a UGA football fan is like being in love with a cheating woman: you can't bring yourself to leave her but she just keeps on letting you down.

Word around Tallahassee is that their Dynasty moved to Athens in 2002.

Richt is a very good man personally as well as being a good coach. He was a great OC at FSU, but there have been times when his trying to be HC and OC has really hurt UGA on the field. They are just caught in one of those years when they lost too many studs to graduation and haven't had the young guys grow up yet. They'll probably struggle next year as well, but the year after that could be VERY good.

I expect that there will be some staff changes after this season.

Uf 21

Uga 14

How about them Gators! 2 National Championships in the same year.

1.Vandy
2.Florida
3.Georgia
4.South Carolina
5.Alabama
6.Tennessee
7.Auburn
8.Mississippi
9.LSU
10.Kentucky
11.Arkansas
12.Miss State

Where is the information coming from that puts Mississippi State last? That it contains the words “Mississippi” and “State”? The last Princeton Review has it 7th relative to the other SEC schools and all of the other prominent rating services have it between 6th and 8th.

^^

I would put Miss St above LSU and at least tied with Ark and Ole Miss.

Miss St has a very good engineering program.

1.Vandy
2.Florida
3.Georgia
4.Auburn
5.Alabama
6.Tennessee
7.South Carolina
8.LSU
9.Kentucky
10.Arkansas
11. Ole Miss
12.Miss State

Vandy…then run of the mill state schools.

1.Vandy #17
2.Florida # 53 & Georgia #56 (tied)
4. Alabama #79 (Bama has a far superior honors college than Auburn has)
5. Auburn #84
6.Tennessee #104
7.South Carolina #111
8. Kentucky #129

Following I would put as tied
LSU # 124
Arkansas #132
Ole Miss # 143
Miss State #151 (however, does have strong engineering)
